Just got home from my daughter's house where we watched the Bears on their new tv. I'm not usually into tv and sound etc but their picture and sound was great. They bought a 60" Sony SXRD with DPL soemthing or another. They have a sound system "d" something. It's a strip above the tv that sends the sound...I don't get the tech end but it was an unbelievable picture

In the dreams I am naked and she is well-equipped with an Ah So, two big Riedel glasses and a case of Pahlmeyer.

Let me start by saying that until today a tv is a tv. HD, plasma, flat screen, surround sound - none of these words meant anything to me. I don't watch enough tv for it to make a difference.I thought the kids were nuts with all the research they did. They spent months checking out all the options as well as the prices. They ended up purchasing online for $2900. I thought that was risky but again most of my time on the web is here on the BB. I knew I should have made sure I knew what they had before posting. SO maybe most of it made no sense. I am sure it was a 60" SXRD with some sort of DLP tech (?).

As for the drinks, I did partake in plenty of libations. As for the looks, i'm usually taken to be early 40's rather than the 50ish. Ask MI87. He met my SIL and people think i'm her younger sister despite no blood relation.

That's a great price for that set. I'm targeting late Spring to get a new Sony LCD. The one you describe is great, but Mrs. Yoss would prefer we get "one you can hang on the wall". For me that would be the Sony 52" flat panel, I've seen those on line for around $4,000.

I believe the SXRDs from Sony is a liquid crystal on silicone (LCOS) technology. It's like DLP but the mirrors are on microchips. I don't pretend to understand it all but there is less "screen door effect" as you scale up the TV size or sit closer to the TV. I've been drooling over the 50" for a while but my 10 year old 36" Toshiba tube TV just won't die. That and all the expense of buying the new cables, receiver, etc. coupoled with the bills from College Illinois are putting a serious damper on our discretionary spending. Oh well.

Thanks, MI87. That's the tech stuff the kids were saying. To me it was alphabet soup. They were actually going to buy the 50" when he saw the deal on the 60". Now my husband wants that tv. But it's the same deal with us. We have a 50" hitachi going on 15 years. Knock on wood but no problems. Hubby has agreed to remodel the family room any way I want as long as that tv is part of the deal.
That's a compromise I am willing to make.

In my circle of friends, I'm the techno geek. When they ask me about TV's or speakers, I tell them to trust their eyes/ears. Some people swear by Pioneer, but I've never been crazy about their sets. I see lots of "experts" rag on Sony, but really love their sets.

I would look for prices of LCD's to come down quite a bit a month or so after the Superbowl. Plasmas will come down, from what I've read it's becoming an obsolete technology, kind of like CD players.

Yeah I purchased the 32 inch and it has the best quality by far that I have seen out there. If you want specific pictures let me know.

An interesting tidbit I read when researching our own HDTV purchase was that buyers frequently say their only regrets when purchasing were not buying an HDTV set sooner and not getting a larger screen when they did upgrade. We ended up with a Sony SXRD XBR - the 60 inch looked gigantic when first delivered, but we have actually thought we could have gotten away with the larger 70-inch model. The HD channels are unbelievable. Keep in mind if your room has a lot of light/windows the plasma or shiny screens will reflect light much more than the matte LCD screens. we got ours at Abt. Good luck.

My daughter has the 60" sony sxrd. It has a great picture. The best price I have seen for that is $2500. They also have the 50" samsung plasma in the bedroom. It also looks pretty good. Costco has the 50" aquos for $3000. I guess it comes down to hang or not to hang and of course, does size really matter. Does the size of the room affect which to buy? My room is 13.5 x 20

M, I would keep the option open for hanging it on the wall. Neither of ours are on the wall, but some day one or both may be. I have been hearing great things about the Vizio as to price and quality. I usually read the reviews for the flat panels that I am interested in on the Amazon site. I had gotten some excellent advice especially for the first one when I was trying to decide between Sony, Sharp, and Samsung. I would also suggest that you check out the Costco online site as they have some really good specials that are not always in the store. As for LCD vs Plasma just remember: LCD can handle natural and ambient lighting and Plasma can't. If you are bringing the tv home from the store in your vehicle, LCD's can be laid flat, where Plasma's must ALWAYS remain upright. Good luck and keep us posted.
