Ted,

Just curious, did you ever sell this puppy?

As a matter of fact, no. Still sitting in a neighbor's garage, ignored and forgotten.

Did the original 1970 plaid and vinyl luggage come stock from the factory with it?

I have no idea. My father-in-law is long gone, and my mother-in-law doesn't know. But it's certainly part of the deal now.

interesting...my parents had 2 beetles when I was a kid...I remember one had a door latch problem on the passenger side. We lived in Farmer City, IL which had a town square. One day when I was 5, we were going around the square and centrifigal force pushed me against the passenger side door which spontaneously opened and I rolled out (no kid seats or belts those days, and no, my Mom is not britney spears, that was just the way it was) into the town square. Fortunately, no cars were closely following and my mom was only going 5mph or so...a lot of fond memories of that car.

Anyway, if the car is still around in 12 years maybe I'll get it for my kid to drive to school...no way he is touching my WRX...

If I ruled the world all 16-20 year old drivers would be required to only drive cars that had a 0-60 time of 10 seconds or more and have a top speed of 5 mph under the limit zone they are in...

This might explain a lot about you. It's too late to sue, so Fan is not interested in a suit against VW or your mother. Also, I thought you were the Physics guy.....it's centrifugal

Correction, it is not too late if he is, and has been, under a disability.

Don't call me, I'll call you!

That's right, I'm a physics guy, not an english major, so sue me...

And Fan, you sound like Jay Jansen out of peoria...that guy has made so much coin as a personal injury lawyer he even built his own building called the "Jansen Law Center"...it should be renamed 'Ambulance Chasers Training Center"

Hey, Ted...have you done any research into what that car is worth?

I have the same vintage BMW. I know they made substantially fewer examples of the BMW, and I believe it is rarer than the VW and, from what I can tell from the photos, it is in better condition, yet I don't think it's worth $5K. My car would probably fetch around $3,500-4,000.

Oddly, my mechanic is making a play for my car, along with a few other people. He came over and actually kidnapped it from my driveway today. Likes to tinker with old BMWs. One thing I realized as he pulled away is that I had never seen my car being driven by anyone else before. Seeing it go up my bumpy street made me realize what a cool car it is. There is no way in hell I can sell it.

Your best bet to establish a value is to go to eBay's "eBay Motors" section and do a search for similar vehicles under the "Completed listings" area. (This will give you actual paid prices over the past six months, rather than current bids.)

Says my car is worth between $3,000-5,000. I think that is very accurate.
