Safety Council: Ban Cell Phones While Driving

Question:
To what level do you think cell phone usage in the car should be controlled?

Choices:
Hand free is fine
Need to pull over
Limit call time to two minutes
Total ban-I'm all about safety

Using the phone to talk to someone is fine. Hands full, hands free - either way is OK.

My personal downfall is reading e-mail while driving. I can't control myself. When I hear the buzz, I have to check it. And even I recognize that this is dangerous when the car is moving. I absolutely cannot read a screen and be 100% aware of what is going on around me. Knock on wood, I've never had an issue, but someday . . .

I see that option being exercised every day.

My favorite is the minivan mom with kids in the back-nice to see your concern for your childrens safety is paramount.

Hopefully you don't hurt anyone if you do have an issue.

People should know the limits of their multi-tasking abilities. I knew mine were poor when I had to be on the phone with a doctor for a medical situation as I drove to Chicago. When I realized that I had absolutely no recollection of the majority of the drive from Glen Ellyn to Northwestern Memorial, it scared me to death. I let my kids answer my phone if they are in the car with me. If I have to answer, I take care of business quickly.

I am a good driver and give good phone conversation - just not simultaneously! Smile

Fan has this down pat. As far as I can tell...he simply looks at the phone when it is down near the shifter and ignores the road and traffic. Really is something to see. Claims his life insurance is large and his umbrella policy is larger.

I know. I've taken to turning the e-mail alert to silent when I am in the car. But I still glance down at the phone at red lights to see if the indicator light is blinking green or red.

Note to self-Avoid driving on Western, be on the lookout for dented Lexus sedan swerving all over the road.

I do mean to be hard on you. My brother was hit in his car by someone who missed a stop sign. His car was pushed into oncoming traffic and totaled. He was fortunate not to be injured more seriously. Please think about what you are doing.

Fan is a golfer... He is used to keeping his head down while he drives.

My wife was almost killed by Fan on Roosevelt. Stay away from there as well. The funny thing is, she was on the phone with me at the time. She normally doesn't swear...

Was it not on Roosevelt? I couldn't remember where it happened.

The blizzard has crossed over into Illinois, put those phones down and drive safely.

This winter must have Tom Skilling in weather forecasting heaven. That and Allison Payne's return.
