excerpts from above link:

---------------
In the end, Mr. Obama chose neither to vote for nor against the bill. He voted “present,” effectively sidestepping the issue, an option he invoked nearly 130 times as a state senator.

“If you are worried about your next election, the present vote gives you political cover,” said Kent D. Redfield, a professor of political studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield. “This is an option that does not exist in every state and reflects Illinois political culture.”
-----------------

I'm wondering if he just stuck a paperclip on his voting desk to vote present...

Couple of things:

First, why did not not quote this part of the article?

quote:
Mr. Obama’s aides and some allies dispute the characterization that a present vote is tantamount to ducking an issue. They said Mr. Obama cast 4,000 votes in the Illinois Senate and used the present vote to protest bills that he believed were drafted unconstitutionally or as part of a broader legislative strategy.

“No politically motivated attacks in the 11th hour of a closely contested campaign can erase a record of leadership and courage,” said Bill Burton, Mr. Obama’s spokesman.

An examination of Illinois records shows at least 36 times when Mr. Obama was either the only state senator to vote present or was part of a group of six or fewer to vote that way.

In more than 50 votes, he seemed to be acting in concert with other Democrats as part of a strategy.

(snip)

In other cases, Mr. Obama’s present votes stood out among widespread support as he tried to use them to register legal and other objections to parts of the bills.

Second, this article/blog written by Springfield's best political reporter will answer/debunk a lot if not most of that article.

About those present votes

Someone sent me this quiz today. I took it and was shocked at the selection it made for me. There were both Republicans and Democrats in my top 5. I now have to re-evaluate my choice (after I eliminate the “flip-floppers” and look at the individual issues).

If you take the quiz, I recommend you click on the question. Once I read the explanation, I changed my answer on a few.

When I did this quiz, it showed the candidates for the LAST presidential election....did I do something wrong?

I did another one of these via another website. I'll have to see if I can find that one.

It's interesting how one test concluded Jon Edwards and the other Barack Obama...both are my close second choice but not my first. I'll have to start paying very close attention.

Very Helpful....Barack, Guiliani, Edwards and Huckabee are all tied with 38%. Great, that helped. Smile

Again, very helpful. Ron Paul and Guiliani were tied with Barack, Huckabee and Edwards just behind. Great! Smile

Huckabee is a kinder, gentler George Bush. Also, more articulate and intelligent. Nonetheless, his policies will barely differ from what we currently have and those that do, scare me.

More articulate and intelligent than Bush? I have an 8 year-old that fits that description.

Huck has said some really stupid things so far. He will be the entertainment of the election season.

This comment brings up a good question, do you really think that George Bush is a bad person?

Although I'm not a fan, I don't for a second think that he doesn't have a good heart and the best of intentions....I just think he sucks at what he does.

Maybe I'm reading him wrong so I would be interested in what others thought.

It's like a married couple, Fan. I'll bet there are a lot of people that assume that Parker is an idiot simply because she is married to me. It's hard for Bush to distance himself from his Veep . . . who is a total tool.

Yes. He is not incompetent like Jimmy Carter. He has an unclean agenda. He is reckless with facts, and was elected governor of Texas with smear campaigns that square right up with the Swift Boaters in 2004. He did not have the best of intentions with the WMD argument, which led us into a war in Iraq. He hung Colin Powell out to dry after that disaster. He did not have the best of intentions with the Nigerian Uranium falsehood which he shared in a State of the Union address. His administration outed a covert CIA agent and the man who was convicted of obstructing justice had his sentence commuted. A principled man, a Christian (as he claims), would not resort to the tactics and pass the buck policies of this President.

She is an idiot....never says hi to me. NEVER!

Plus she left her license behind and I rescued it....she doesn't remember it....and doesn't say hi. EVER!

I believe George Bush may be a nice person. Hell, I'm sure Vicky Hase is nice woman/mother/grandmother. But George is deceptive. I believe he is fundamentally evil. But I'm sure he is a gracious host. I'd have dinner with him.

Parker is the lone woman in Glen Ellyn that isn't fooled by your boyish good looks. She sees you for what you are. An idiot.
