Wow, their not even putting the "safety" spin on this-

Wheaton police are using a traffic enforcement grant to spend extra time looking for speeders along four major thoroughfares in the city: Roosevelt Road, Butterfield Road, Naperville Road and Geneva Road. Officers will be assigned to enforce vehicle speed laws along these roadways at varied intervals. Extra patrol efforts will begin in April and extend through September.

Fewer homeless issues in their CBD allow them to work on other avenues of revenue generation/collection.

It depends on the day. I've been doing some running out that way on PP, they have their fair share of homeless. Don't forget the PADS office is right on the PP where it splits into the Elgin spur.

Don't you worry, Wheaton has its share of issues too. According to a good friend, who used to live in the new townhomes across from the post office, it was not uncommon for homeless folk to knock on their door in the late evening and solicit food and/or money. In at least one case, a homeless woman had knocked on their door at 10 PM asking to come in and take a shower. IMO, the folks of Wheaton fought a good fight, but in the end, were defeated.

Here's an example:

quote:
In 1995, Wheaton residents discovered that two convicted sex offenders were living in their local shelters. Alarmed by what they saw as a growing problem, the city’s Task Force on Homelessness commissioned Dan A. Lewis (IPR-Education) to study the homeless issue and make recommendations. Lewis had conducted a similar analysis in Evanston a year earlier.

Lewis and co-investigator Bruce Nelson observed and interviewed 60 homeless and other local residents in 1997. They concluded that residents’ fears were not only greatly exaggerated, but that Wheaton’s homeless program could serve as a model for other suburbs.

This just blows my mind.

Recent article on the slaying in Homeless-a-plenty Madison, WI.

Link

Phalen Pierson, 48, said he spends six days a week lounging in the Capitol basement between shifts as a caterer. He said he could never relax the same way in his hometown of Cleveland.

"They'd call security on you," said Pierson, who has been homeless on and off for eight years. "In Madison, it's like 'here, here, here.' There's too many handouts. A lot of these guys sit on their butts all day and don't do nothing but drink."

The difference is our town has incurred a serious crime by a homeless person. I am convinced Jackson was a PADS client leading up to that horrendous act. Yet, our homeless shelters have been given a free pass. Jackson had a criminal record before taking the innocence of a child. Yet it's business as usual in old GE. What is it going to take?

No Sh*t? Do you think?

"We've kind of institutionalized an enabling environment downtown for this transient population to grow unchecked," Balles said. "They are downtown preying largely off of that student population and really preying off a lot of our good compassion as Madisonians. In a way, they are taking advantage of us."

Really? I'm so shocked!!!!! Red Face

One problem area has been nearby Brittingham Lake Ellyn,Shocks Square, Panfish Park, Starbucks & Einsteins where neighbors complain that transients use illegal drugs and drink alcohol all day. They often sleep in the park CBD, Library, Einsteins and Starbucks overnight all day and occasionally try to enter nearby cars and homes and commercial buildings.

Clam, just wait to the warm weather arrives then take sorry a#$ in that bucket of bolts over to Adams Park in Wheaton. Just check out the Gazebos. They have em too! However I never see them panhandling in Wheaton's CBD.

Sell the car yet? Can I drive it? . . . . .Please! Clams Test Drive!
