I need some type of squirrel remediation program. At any given time, I have at least 20 squirrels in my front yard feasting on the black walnuts from my 2007 Glen Ellyn award winning tree valued at approximately 16 thousand dollars. However, recently the squirrels have had enough of the walnuts and have turned to eating my jack-o-lantern, my wife's corn display and even my front porch. As I believe that the source of this infestation is the award winning black walnut tree valued at approximately 16 thousand dollars, I am considering chopping down the black walnut and putting it on e-bay. Afterall, it is worth 16k...Glen Ellyn told me so.

You may want to reconsider, as black walnuts are a "protected class" under sec. 1983. However, I do have a very nice chainsaw. I'll loan it to you after Grateful returns it. He muttered something about a net that needed some serious trimming.

A Crossman 880 should do the trick, about $70 at Sports Authority.

I know a person in LaGrange that trapped the squirrels in his yard because they were eating the cover on his hot tub. He would spray paint their tails and release them in a forest preserve about 2 miles from his home. Some of the squirrels eventually found their way back. He later changed release points to a forest preserve on the opposite side of the Des Plaines River and the squirrels never found a way back.

Airguns, bow and arrow, even trap - seem fair. But somehow water is just sooo wrong.
But as I doubt you could hit a large raccoon, let alone a small fast moving squirrel, if it was standing just five feet away, you may be better off with the trap and release.
I also loved squirrels until I bought - my problem is they dig up the lawn trying to bury black walnuts ... they sure do seem to love those things.
I have a chainsaw you can borrow to remove your 'storm damaged', 'diseased or infested' tree.

Depending on the size and condition, those things are worth money. Never have a tree company take down a walnut. There are special companies that harvest them.
Truth be told, it's in the parkway. I can't sell it.
However, I may bring a private cause of action against the Village for nuisance...and as the squirrels are an extension of the tree that they planted...trespass and criminal damage to property.
I love squirrels and the thought of someone shooting or drowning them makes me very sad...
I am having a problem with one very determined Red-bellied woodpecker. Other than those stupid owl statue things, any ideas how to keep it away? (and no violence either!)

the best/most valuable wood from the black walnut is in the burl/root system.
my mom has lived in the same house for 50 years. perfect specimen of black walnut tree is on her property. that sucker is pencil straight for at least forty feet before the first bough. tree guys are always knocking on her door. she's not selling. i figure she'll wait too long, then it'll be worthless. it's become pretty wind damaged over the years.
anyway, recently some guy scrapes the house next door to hers and builds a new one. during construction he asks if my mom will let him cut the walnut tree down (it's close to the property line and partially hangs over his lot), she politely declines. the other day she told me that the guy sweeps/rakes the walnuts that fall onto his lot back onto my 75-year-old mother's lot for her to pick up. . . so now i have that to deal with. sheesh.
