the best/most valuable wood from the black walnut is in the burl/root system.

my mom has lived in the same house for 50 years. perfect specimen of black walnut tree is on her property. that sucker is pencil straight for at least forty feet before the first bough. tree guys are always knocking on her door. she's not selling. i figure she'll wait too long, then it'll be worthless. it's become pretty wind damaged over the years.

anyway, recently some guy scrapes the house next door to hers and builds a new one. during construction he asks if my mom will let him cut the walnut tree down (it's close to the property line and partially hangs over his lot), she politely declines. the other day she told me that the guy sweeps/rakes the walnuts that fall onto his lot back onto my 75-year-old mother's lot for her to pick up. . . so now i have that to deal with. sheesh.

Truth be told, it's some old woman's tree. I just take the walnuts that fall and rake/sweep them back onto her yard. The squirrel problem is all her fault!

So cute...until they live inside your vaulted ceiling and fight with one another at 2 AM. Not to mention peeing on your window header allowing the golden showers to flow inside your bedroom windows. And then there is the wire chewing. That's really cool.

That must a large (wide) parkway. Walnut is a rather large tree.

And thanks for that tree link, very informative.

T.A. Superette - Very Funny Comic! Very funny indeed.

I heard that squirrels and other rodents, ie, 13 stripers, have a panic attack and cardiac arrest before they even hit the water. Just saying. Heard it through the grapevine!

Both the shooting and drowning methods are equally effective. One summer the neighbor up here trapped and submerged 125 chipmunks. Not a peep out there for a couple of years. The shooting method takes a little more patience. Squirrels are far easier to hit than chipmunks, but I have shot both on a regular basis.

I'm not saying the neighbor's actions are defensible, but I suppose he could cut (back to the property line) any limbs encroaching on his property and let the tree look like Com Ed hacked at it, right? And (taking your mother's age out of the equation) it is HER tree dropping these things on HIS property, why shouldn't she be responsible for cleaning them up? What if it were one of those disgusting mulberry trees? I had one of those hanging over my deck in LaGrange once and did not get along especially well with that neighbor. Without asking or entering onto the neighbor's property I lopped off a sizeable chunk of branches that hung over the lot line. I'm not sure the nutcase neighbor ever knew I did it, but I sure as hell wasn't going to ask her permission.

I don't know how we became friends. You constantly exhibit anti-social behavior and are, apparently, a horrible neighbor.

yeah, i hear you. the sad thing is she lived for 50 years next to another neighbor who didn't mind or would NEVER have considered doing anything so petty. the sadder thing, to me, is that your logical, rational, and perfectly legal solution is how many new glen ellynites think and act nowadays.

socially, the town's changed. i know that must sound like some townie wishing for the good-old days, but in some respects i guess i do.

plus, the guy's a real dick. . .

I couldn't agree with you more, T.A. I've lived in this town my entire life and I'm constantly amazed at how indifferent, even rude, people have become towards each other. That's why I bought up in Saugatuck. All of the neighbors look out for each other there and don't bitch and whine about petty stuff such as someones nuts crossing over property lines - pun semi-intended. ;-)

Yep, noticed that too. I don't know if it's a younger generation (new Glen Ellynites), but the respect for older people somehow is missing at times too. This is a good example. Ya help out an older neighbor!

Kinda cute ain't they? Must be a Canadian squirrel.

Leaves and other debris from trees are all part of homeownership. This is the price we pay for living in an established suburb. If we didn’t want the lawn maintenance from ours and neighboring lawns, we would move to one of the non-tree towns where there are lots of houses and no trees! However this isn’t our choice so we just suck it up and clean it up! TA, tell your mom's neighbor this!

I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.

i'm a lifer too. so is my mom; so are my wife and her father. so are two brother-in-laws, their parents and grandparents. many's the conversation around our dinner tables wondering if the new phenomenon of multimillion dollar homes -- which have surely increased everyone's home values -- are populated by people who have enriched GE socially. personally, i think the experiment of trying to create one socioeconomic class in GE has been a detriment. time will tell if i am just a sentimental dinosaur who needs to amble on (or die off).

btw, on another subject, i'm still trying to find the time to get to nathan's. i'll let you know once i've been lucky enough to do so.

you have got to be kidding! some guy rakes the walnuts back into a yard of an eldery woman. I hope he rots. You shouldn't of bought a home next to a tree that you find a burden. What's next raking the leaves into her yard? He's a loser.

We have a neighbor who throws branches over the fence into our yard...we still haven't figured out how he can tell what trees the branches come from. He has one of those huge trees with those banana peel like droppings that load up our yard every year. We pick them up with the leaves and branches and put them out with the yard waste every Tuesday. This guy is real big in the church too. He thinks he's doing it when no one sees him...but that isn't the case. It's kinda funny but sad too. I wish all I has to do was worry about tree branches that didn't belong to me or return leaves that didn't belong in my yard....

Does anyone know if you can paint something on the garage doors or wood pillares to prevent the squirrels or chipmunks from chewing on them...something that isn't harmful to the wood?

Don't you just love the folks that think one Sunday and some volunteering at a church not only gets them into heaven, but also allows them to be completely indifferent to their neighbors? We have a couple of those too... I digress, M2C, I've used this with good results, but haven't sprayed it on wood. I think it's clear so it may work:

Squirrel Repellent

Good luck!
