Besides holiday music, share some of your favorite traditions. We always put out a puzzle on ther dining room table during this time, especially when the weather gets this cold. Usually a 1000 piece. It kind of drew everyone together in the evening and gave us the opportunity for small talk and sharing things we may of normally not had the time to with the busy season. My mom still does it at her home and I know we each do it in our own homes now. One year we all stole a piece in order to have the opportunity to place the last piece...when all was done their were 10 pieces missing and we only had seven in the family...some friends wanted to be a part of the tradition too!.

We make sugar cookies with frosting for sharing throughout the holiday. We also drive around the area and enjoy the Christmas decorations, while listening to Christmas music. We fight over why we have to go to Fishette's father's house and put up with his third wife and her wack job kids......EVERY YEAR!!!!! [Edit...many of the past years the fight was over going to Fishette's father's house and putting up with his second wife and her completely screwed up family. One year after dinner second wife's brother's wife pulled out an electric keyboard and started singing(I use that word out of the goodness of my heart). Everyone left the table and she continued alone in the dining room. The uncomfortableness was right out of an episode of The Office. BTW Merry Christmas. What part of "no" don't you understand?

As a kid, we always had a Swedish Christmas Eve Dinner. Potato sausage, lute fish, limpa bread, lingonberries, etc. I always dreamed of normal food. Then I married into an Italian family. Snails, squid, various other fish for Christmas Eve. I guess I just can't win. Now, when I do Christmas Eve it's usually ham (for my sis), pounds of fresh shrimp and hor d oveures. Christmas Day is usually at the Arten parents' house. It's usually a scream fest. (Are Italians able to talk in a normal tone of voice?) It's usually food that has been cooked too long. Last year, all we ate was the ravioli. Seems they couldn't coordinate the rest of the food, so a turkey and all the trimmings never got served. I just want to go snowmobiling!

I always take comfort in that fact that Parker does not read any of the worthless, time-wasting shit that I feel the need to put up on this site. My guess is Fishette doesn't either.

At the 8675309 household, we decorate the coyote out in front. We also sip hot cocoa as we put up the Festivus pole. Festivus for the rest of us!! My husband's family has an annual shopping trip to Woodfield. My inlaws buy all the kids & spouses (17 people altogether) some big ticket gifts during the trip. That's how we got our snowblower last year. It is a nice idea in theory, but....coordinating where 9,000 people are in hot, sweaty Woodfield isn't really fun. But it still is very kind and generous of them.

Mrs. A, I think you just mentioned my whole holiday existence since I have been married. Loud Italians(is there a reason they all scream) and seafood on Christmas Eve......I have inherited the special job of shucking 4-5 dozen clams for raw clams and baked clams.....So if anyone has hints on schucking clams so that I don't develop a handicap, please let me know.....

As a kid we always had an Italian Christmas Eve Dinner. Squid, Fish, Clams, etc. Then I married into a Swedish Family. On Christmas it's lute fish, potato sausage, limpa bread, lingonberries and Glug. I guess I just can't win. The highlight of the day was when the FiL fell asleep with a Miti in one hand and the TV remote in the other. He never dropped either one. They live in Florida now so as Mrs A said. I just want to go Snowmobiling ! Of course thats after we spend a great Italian Christmas with all the crazies that make up our family.

Let's not forget the pickled herring and Glogg!

Respectfully, any one who would eat Lutefisk needs to have their head examined. Soaked in lye? And then you eat it?

That could explain a lot.

1. Drive around to view the lights in town. 2. Early evening church service (kid's service: short and cute). 3. Open one present from a family member before preparing for bed. 4. Notes to santa along with cookies and then an apple for rudolph and oatmeal sprinkled in the yard for the other reindeer. 5. Open presents in the morning. Santa fills the stockings and provides one special present for each child. The rest are from Mom and Dad. 6. Go to in-laws, each cheese and other snacks to the point that we are too full for the big meal. We do this still...even though the kids are getting older.

As Catheruns, (Lutheran/Catholic family) we must be politically correct. We sometimes attend a Lutheran service, sometimes go to German mass at St. Alphonsus in Chicago. Hubby nods off during either service, gets elbowed by me, at which time he picks on one of the kids for fidgeting. Trying to draw attention away from himself. If she's in town, my M-I-L gets liquored up and is always very fun - and FUNNY! Hubby and I stay up late and have a little alone time, exchanging gifts without the kids around. Kids go to bed way too late, and still get up at 6AM regardless. Christmas Day - head over to my sisters in Wheaton. I cook a lot, and we pack it all into our car year after year. After writing this, I am amazed at how we do the same stuff every single year. But I guess that is what 'tradition' means.

What the heck is wrong with herring, anyway? Creamed herring is the bomb, but I just discovered a wine/onion one that I like at Springbrook. It's imported from Sweden and very tasty. I've never really cared for herring in wine until trying this one. Give it a shot people. And if you do go to springbrook, their store produced quac is pretty good, and the fajita and taco mixes that they have behind the meat counter are good and convenient - with all the veggies mixed in. Throw and go.
