BTN: A little alcohol never hurt any terrorist plot.
Years ago, I read "Ava's Man" about moonshiners and revenuers in that area. If you have never been in North Georgia where it meets Alabama, you are missing a beautiful area of the country and a lesson in survival. My uncle was one of those guys in the book. |

I do give these old coots a few points just for stirring their stumps. Heck, the young 'un is 65! Been reading about Sherman's 1864 campaign in northern Georgia - from Chattanooga, to Reseca, to Kennesaw Mountain and of course, on to Atlanta by September, 1864. I have driven through that area but not since around 2008. |

My wife and I lived in Waleske, GA from 1991 to 1996. (Long story. Don't ask.)
Waleska is an exurban crossroads* town considerably north of Atlanta. In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Pretty much at the southern edge of “North Georgia” as described in the story. Beautiful country. The county we were in boasted what was then the world's largest Wal-Mart. (Pronounced, ”Wall-Mark.“) Newt Gingrich was our U.S. Representative. Waleska's one claim to fame was Reinhardt College (now ”University“), because it was Newt's broadcast base for his ”American Civilization“ satellite-distributed telecourses. For some reason, as I type this, I find myself humming the Duelling Banjos theme from ”Deliverance.“ * During our tenure there, the 4-way stop sign at Waleska's one ”downtown“ intersection was replaced by a flashing red light. |
