Here we go with the US media again. Pakistan just had a flood that is impacting 13+ million people. Larger than the impact of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined and it doesn't even rate a headline in USA today, Tribune, etc.?? Just an AP story which that just had it's headline changed to a flood in China rather than lead with the Pakistan story, though it is buried in the article.

I've been following it all sorts of US media outlets.... you must be only skimming for info? I've been staring at this stuff over the weekend, online of course - I know the start of it was 2 weeks ago and it is ongoing... maybe that's why it doesn't jump out at you as #1 on an "at a glance search engine page", but it's #1 once you open the news outlet pages.

Love "Careful with that Axe Eugene" One of the last Barrett contributions I think.
But I see no reference to either the Chinese or Pakistani disasters on the on-line versions of USA Today, or the Tribune. The BBC of course is all over it. Tens of millions of people are effected and it is going to take billions of $ in international aid ASAP to slow the death toll. Just seems like news to me. Washington Post - Nope USA Today - Nope BBC - Both Stories |

And obama would tax them for being rich water barons then take it all away from them to mix up more of his kool-aid.
Another great post ronkas. |

You should see You-Tube and see Waters scream in some of the vids (different versions, there are a few) (minus Syd of course. They don't credit him either). Crap quality agree, but for free... I believe either this song or One of These Days, there is a quiet reference to Steven (one of their staff) in the song that is quietly chanted. I'll have to search that again as I saw that trivia on Youtube. (followup-nevermind-I believe it's Corrosion or Embryo from Pompeii, not the other two) Ahhhhhh, such young guns. Love them! Okay -back to it, BBC- yes definately - i agree, a British friend of mine put me wise to that source many many years ago. our papers here, Trib and Times, I swear they are no more than just a "local" paper. I see in MSNBC, and I have a google home page -Reuters, Google news had it big time for a while, now I see it's only if you open it. How I wish, how I wish you were here. and Bush would have attacked them during this disaster by saying there were weapons of mass destruction in the flood waters (but really it's because they have brown skin and aren't ultra crazy Christian) |

Bush made a lot of mistakes I won't dispute that.
But one thing he did right and one thing he never gets a lot of credit for was directing a great deal of US Aid to Africa. Specifically for things like AIDS and Malaria treatment. Does anyone remember the Rawanda genocide. That was another big story that wasn't covered very well here. Remember who was president then. Let me jog your memory it was Bill Clinton. So the United States then the only worlds Superpower sat back and did nothing while several million Africans where slaughtered. So, glellyn before you start throwing around the race card you might want to check your facts. Just a little bit better |

Why does the US and World have to come rushing in for every natural disaster? I feel for the people of Pakistan, China..etc, but where do you draw the line? S**T HAPPENS. People deal with it and move on. What would happen if we didn't come swooping in with benefit concerts and Sean Penn?
Part of the reason that so many are affected is the crappy conditions they live in prior to a disaster. That is why you always hear about the bus crash in India that kills 10,000 people or the flood that affects 13 million. “just like in real life there's still rules on this team. Unlike real life? Nobody's above the rules on this field." – Coach Eric Taylor |

The lack of coverage thing disturbed me- could be because we will certainly be footing the majority of the billions necessary for humanitarian aid to Pakistan.
I also heard a snippet on the radio last weekend about how most all mainstream U.S. media outlets have become increasingly biased in their reporting. I mean everyone knows you have to consider the source and that it's always been pretty difficult to be truly non-biased in reporting but apparently we've crossed the line into blatant bias when it serves the controlling interest- to the point of falsehoods and withholding information. That really bothers me because there seems to be (is) an exponential explosion going on in sources of information as the internet grows + the addition of wireless deceives etc. If none of it is even close to trustworthy then we're starting to approach how the USSR manipulated the public- create your own self serving (non)facts. Falsely revise past information or make it hard to find or ignore it. Pretty soon we will be sheeple if not already. The first time I really became suspicious beyond my usual cynical self was when I was prescribed the wonderful "purple pill" (nexium)- maybe the late 90's. I started to have hip pains when I slept resulting in a lot of tossing and turning. Went to the Dr. who said something like "well you're starting to get old". This went on for about a year until I saw a headline about Nexium causing hip fractures in the elderly. A little research uncovered multitudes of people from young athletes to the elderly with joint/Nexium problems- went back to find the on-line news report I had read and it was GONE. Like I had dreamed it- not even buried somewhere. Apparently I witnessed the power of the #1 prescription in America. Anyway I stopped taking it and never had pain again. (My Dr. denied it was the Nexium). And now 12 some years later- Purple Pill Bad The FDA requires a somewhat wimpy warning on this and similar drugs. I mean there's a 119 million prescriptions out there in a country of 247 million people. Countless broken bones, needless suffering, and early deaths in the elderly could have been avoided with responsible reporting of the original study in the 90's. Anyway, anyone have some suggestions for decent news reporting? I used to get the WSJ but even that has changed with Murdochs purchase. P.S. Personally I don't find this a partisan issue. |

Seems to be getting worse, as the United Nations now estimates that at least one-fifth of the country is underwater.

I believe what you're looking for is actually, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"....quite a bit different.

Just watched Little Miss Sunshine again ...still hilarious...as a fan of a brand of sarcasm referred to lovingly as "sarcaustic", I'm reminded of this exchange:
Richard (played by Greg Kinnear): Sarcasm is the refuge of losers. Frank (played by Steve Carell): Really? Richard: Sarcasm is losers trying to bring winners down to their level. Frank: Thank you for opening my eyes to what a loser I am! How much do I owe you for those pearls of wisdom? Richard: Oh, that ones on the house. And just being here on the board reminds me of this quote: Richard: Oh my God, I'm getting pulled over. Everyone, just... pretend to be normal. |
