The Daily herald recently ran a "where is she now" story on Elvira Arellano.
"Her (Arellano's)latest cause is pushing for immigration reform in Mexico, where Central American immigrants are often held in detention centers with abhorrent living conditions. "However badly immigrants are treated in the United States, here it's a lot worse. It's inhuman," she said.
Johnny B interviewed Arellano yesterday-with the help of a translator.
I'm thinking if you want to push immigration reform in the English speaking United States, you might want to take the time to learn the language. Next learn about United States law, history and culture. You don't have to give up your culture, just make some attempt to assimilate. It's been done before, as millions of legal immigrants will attest to.
Try some of these pointers and you might actually be welcomed into this country. Expect special rules and privileges from a country you've entered illegally and you should probably have the local church on speed dial.

I'm pretty indifferent on the whole immigration thing. However, I'm going to lose it if I have to press 1 for English one more time. I LIVE HERE!!!! WE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE!!!! STOP MAKING ME PRESS 1!
Or how about your order at a fast food place getting screwed up because the person can't speak English. The Glendale Heights McDonald's drive thru has given me a regular Coke on three different occasions when I ordered a Diet. the third time I went in to complain and they had to get the manager because the kid could barely speak English.

I am concerned that the U.S. school systems may be letting these students down, though I'm also confused as to how my kid can become fairly fluent in Spanish as a second language in a few years.
Just wait until you see your first bilingual ballot, if you don't like indicating your language preference with the bank or phone company, that will likely send you right around the bend!
