Despite that she's "in your face" in all of the media....I think it's great that she's using her position to benefit positive issues.
Whether we like it or not (personally, I find it just as irritating as the rest of you), she has a following. If she wants to use the "power" of that for the greater good, more power to her!

I never understand the Oprah bashing that goes on in some places. She's done a heckuvalot of good throughout the years, and I admire what she's done with her life tremendously. Personally, I applaud her because she single-handedly got people talking about novels again, at least for a while there. (Until stupid Jonathan Franzen had to spoil it for all of us, so then she only started highlighting dead or nonfiction authors.) So she appears to enjoy her fame and fortune - what's wrong with that? She also does a lot of good with it, as well.
I just think there are some people who don't like to see others get too successful. And Oprah's about as successful as they come.
Part of the reason she gets bashed is that there is a funky Karma about her. Middle of the road white females respond to her and comprise most of her audience, and if that isn't odd enough, when a black person is on she switches to the "jive" talk. The black community calls it "going white". Who knows what she is except gay, does she ever talk about that or Stedman?
Frankly I don't care much. Talk show hosts have always been off their rockers all the way back to Donahue. Except for Jerry Springer
but he didn't use his for the greater good and she is.
He and his followers believed they were acting for the greater good. While their opinion may be unique and not shared by the general population, it was still their belief.
Kudo's for Oprah, she's made a ton of money selling a persona, I'll never fault her for that.
But she's not an expert on everything and should really learn to temper her opinions, since her minions seems to believe anything that comes out her pie hole.

The minions will forever be minions, regardless of who they're serving....I'd much rather they serve someone like Oprah than someone like Charles Manson....
Her opinions are just that....her opinions. Anyone who takes them as anything more assumes the responsibility of such.
Not to mention that simply believing that something is for the greater good doesn't mean that it is.

None of it's any different than Tom Cruise and John Travolta's (or any other celebrity, honestly) public support of the Christian Science (or any other religion).
You can agree or disagree, just as anyone else (including the minions) can.

Not sure I completely agree. Seems to me that Oprah has cultivated a somewhat different role than Cruise and Travolta who are actors 1st - and everything else a distant 2d.
Don't you think O considers herself to be something other than simply a "celebrity" or "entertainer"?
Actually, I'm not sure Tom Cruise, anyway, would agree when you say he's an "actor first." As far as I can tell - and admittedly, I don't put that much thought into it - he has a real leadership role within the church of Scientology.
Oprah just reflects society's trends; The Secret was hugely popular before she talked about it on her show. Most of the things she advocates are all in the name of self improvement; you can choose to listen or not, but as long as she's not urging people to go sell crack to children, but rather to feel better about themselves, I still don't get the bashing.
