Panhandling as a lifestyle

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the homeless & PADS, this is a good read.

Agreed, Yoss - If you didn't click and read this entire story go back and do so. The reporter really did an excellent job on an issue that seems to be cropping up everywhere.

The reader comments are also interesting.

"We have to have rules or everyone would run wild," said Jeff Joe, 54, a Peace Park regular.

If you spend time at the park, you will learn this: Panhandlers average $10 to $15 an hour; the most lucrative time is during state sports tournaments, when high school students from small towns flood the strip; older people are less generous; college students are where the money's at.

"They want to make a difference, they want to change the world," Joe said.

You would think that panhandlers would want to hang out at Wheaton college, college kids with a WWJD attitude, you could score big time. Yet I can't recall ever seeing any homeless folks anywhere near that campus.

It is private property, no? They can evict anyone they want.

That was not a Dennis Hopper quote. That was a quote by the interim coach after Coach Dale took over the team at the first practice. I believe the next line was: "Is that some sort of threat." By Gene Hackman.

Don't mess with my Hoosier's knowledge. And shame on you Herbold - you actually went to IU.

As always, Fan, you are correct. I probably need to go back and see it for the 367th time and then I will get it right. Jimmy didn't pay attention to his typing.

Actor's name is Chelcie Ross. Believe he played Dan Devine in "Rudy". Also made an appearance at GBS a couple of years ago when the former basketball coach retired.
