Yo - as I recall this is short for Gatling gun or more commonly known Tommy gun, weapon of choice in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and co-opted by "ganstas" today for about any gun.

JRP - thanks for upping my street cred - one of my kids just asked, "Where did you hear about that?" as I watched the YouTube video. Wink

A Gatling gun is a multibarreled weapon that rotates the barrels to effect a very high rate of fire while keeping the barrels from melting. Most US fighters carry a 20mm cannon based on the original Gatling design. I Galting gun would be very difficult to carry around, unless you you were using the 7.62 caliber verson, sometimes called a mini-gun.

A Tommy gun is short for the Thompson sub-machine gun, which is a single barrel machine gun of .45 caliber. An example was used by Tom Hanks's character in "Saving Private Ryan" and of course was a favorite of gansters.

Note to self: Do not rely on own recall when posting on GE message board.

Thanks Yoss, now I can say I've already learned something for the day! Smile

A steady diet of Discovery, TLC, History Channel and the Military Channel comes in handy in times like these. Come on ladies, you know you love men who can talk nerd. Wink

Love men who talk nerd????

How about men who can google...it's a way more impressive technique.

Gat - Urban Dictionary

I believe my first exposure to "gat" was on Dre's first album...straight up homies.

And GEMom2 - you were right.

Yoss - I should have asked the same child who walked by when I was watching the YouTube video to check my facts pre-post - he would have known the difference as he is a huge History Channel/Discovery Channel fan. He has an extensive collection of history books (yes, books) - including most of the Time-Life WWII series purchased at the GEPL book sale that he's read.

This reminds me of a "Seinfeld" episode where George whines "I always wanted to be a "buff" of something. What's it take to be a buff?" And Jerry replies, "First, you have to sleep less than 18 hours a day."

JRP - so according to the website - I was originally right, because it has been historically used incorrectly??! Works for me!

I knew I could find it. This stuff is just pure poetry....it just writes itself.

quote:
[Dr. Dre]
Heh
Yeah
Hell yeah
Heh-heh
You know what I'm sayin'
{*inhale*}
{*exhale*}
Yeah

[Verse 1: Dr. Dre]
Mista Busta
Where ya at?
Can't scrap a lick
So I know you got ya gat
You stay on hard
From gankin' ya raw dawgs
The hood you threw up with
Homies you grew up with
Don't even respect your ***
So now it's time for the doctor to check your ***
Fool
Used to be my homey
Used to be my ace
Now I wanna slap the taste
Out your mouth
Make you bow down to the Row
Gankin' me, now I'm gankin' you, little hoe
Oh
Don't think I forgot
Let you slide
Let me ride
Just another homicide
Yeah, it's me so I'm a talk on
Stompin' on the easiest/+Eazy+est streets that you can walk on
So strap on your Compton hat, you locs
And watch your back, cause you might get smoked, loc
And pass the bud
And stay low-key
B.G., cause you lost all your homey's love
Now call it what you want to
You trip with me
Now it's a must that I trip with you

[Dr. Dre]
Yeah
You know what I'm sayin'
We now have your record company surrounded
Put down the candy and let the little boy go...
Yeah

Pre-Verse: Snoop Doggy Dogg
Bow wow wow, yippy yo, yippy yay
Doggy Dogg's definitely in the
House
Bow wow wow, yippy yo, yippy yay
Death Row's definitely in the
House

[Verse 2: Snoop Doggy Dogg]
Bow wow wow, yippy yo, yippy yay
The sounds of a dog brings me to another day
Play
With my bone, would ya Timmy?
It seems like you're good for making jokes about your jimmy
Well, here's a jimmy joke about your mama
That you might not like
I heard she was a 'Frisco dyke
But on the rizzeals, I'm talkin' about you and me
Toe to toe
Tim M-U-T
Your bark was loud, but your bite wasn't vicious
And them rhymes you were kickin' were quite bootylicious
You get with Doggy Dogg, oh is he crazy?
With ya mama and your daddy hollin', "Baby"
So won't they let you know
That if you step to Dre, fool, you steppin' to Death Row
And I ain't even swangin' them thangs
I'm hollin' 187 with my gat in your mouth, fool (Fool...)

[RBX]
Yeah
Long Beach and Compton together on this track
And just when you thought we were slippin'
BOO-YEAH!
Right back at ya
Now
You wanna step up and get your cranium cracked
Step on up
And remember the name
Mighty
Mighty
D-R.
And we puttin' in work
Yeah

(Verse 3)
[Snoop Dogg] Now understand this
My homey Dre can't be touched
[Dr. Dre] Luke's bendin' over
[Snoop Dogg] So Luke's gettin' stuffed, busta
[Dr. Dre] Must, of thought I was sleazy
I though I was a mark, cause I used to hang with Eazy
[Snoop Dogg] Animosity
Made you speak, but you spoke
Ay yo Dre
[Dr. Dre] What up
[Snoop Dogg] Break him off somethin', loc
[Dr. Dre] If it ain't another hoe that I gots to get with
Gap teeth in your mouth, so my gat's, gots to fit
[Snoop Dogg] With my sack on your tonsils
While you onstage, rappin' at your wack-*** concerts
[Dr. Dre] And I'm a snatch your *** from the backside
To show you how Death Row pull off that whoo-ride
[Snoop Dogg] Now you might not understand me
[Dr. Dre] Cause I'm a rob you in Compton and blast you in Miami
[Snoop Dogg] Then we gon creep to South, Central
On a Street Knowledge mission
[Dr. Dre] As I steps in the temple
Spot him, got him, as I pulls out my strap
Got my chrome to the side of his White Sox hat
[Snoop Dogg] You tryin' to check my homey, you best check yourself
Cause when you diss Dre, you diss yourself

[Dr. Dre]
Hell yeah
So all you mark-*** busters need to raise up
Really doe
Death Row is runnin' the nine-trey
And you know we can't be faded (faded...)

[Jewell]
{*ad-lib singing*}
Long Beach
Compton, yeah
Death Row is in the house, yeah
{*ad-lib singing*}

Nothing embarasses your kids more quickly than talking "street" - even in the confines of your own lovely home. I keep threatening to do the Soulja Boy "Crank That" dance in front of their friend just to keep them in line! Wink

I was fifteen when this stuff came out. I'll never forget the first time I tried playing it in a car with my Dad...needless to say, it was the last. Those were the golden days of rap when Dre, Snoop and Warren G were collaborating on such songs...ah, the golden days.

And now that you mention it, Clam and K-Fed both have a lot in common. For one, they both have two boys to take care of that are injured quite often.

My, but you are young, Mr. Potts.

The "golden days" of gangsta rap were the N.W.A days. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. And gat was being tossed around before Snoop was no bigger than Kriss Kross.

From the album, Straight Outta Compton

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.....

[snip]
But take off the gun so you can see what's up
And we'll go at it punk, I'ma **** you up

Make ya think I'm a kick your ***
But drop your gat, and Ren's gonna blast
I'm sneaky as **** when it comes to crime
But I'm a smoke em now, and not next time

[snip]

For full disclosure, I generally hate rap. Hate the lack of musical ability, hate the cheap shock value, hate the message, hate the effect. Had a college roommate who loved it.

I will admit to liking some of the Beastie Boys.

How dare you leave 2LifeCrew off the list. We are speaking of the same golden age...it was just 8 years long. Smile

Potts,

I know less about rap than...well, anyone. But I do know that if Luther heard you refer to 2LiveCrew that way he would be giving you a beatdown you would not soon forget.

Clam - Here's your chance to make a global linguistic mark - "bizzos" is not a defined word on urbandictionary.com - yet. And yes, I suspected the definition from context, but was looking for verification . . . .

Ruydah, if you are going to correct Potts on his use of 2Lifecrew, at least get the correct picture of Luther on your post.....I know Luther Campbell, and that is not Luther Campbell...

Uh-oh - upon further review, the singular "bizzo" is defined as one who is both a b**ch and a ho. Be careful when using an unfamiliar vernacular! Wink
