Yo - as I recall this is short for Gatling gun or more commonly known Tommy gun, weapon of choice in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and co-opted by "ganstas" today for about any gun.
JRP - thanks for upping my street cred - one of my kids just asked, "Where did you hear about that?" as I watched the YouTube video. |

A Gatling gun is a multibarreled weapon that rotates the barrels to effect a very high rate of fire while keeping the barrels from melting. Most US fighters carry a 20mm cannon based on the original Gatling design. I Galting gun would be very difficult to carry around, unless you you were using the 7.62 caliber verson, sometimes called a mini-gun.
A Tommy gun is short for the Thompson sub-machine gun, which is a single barrel machine gun of .45 caliber. An example was used by Tom Hanks's character in "Saving Private Ryan" and of course was a favorite of gansters. Thanks Yoss, now I can say I've already learned something for the day! |

A steady diet of Discovery, TLC, History Channel and the Military Channel comes in handy in times like these. Come on ladies, you know you love men who can talk nerd.

Love men who talk nerd???? How about men who can google...it's a way more impressive technique. Gat - Urban Dictionary I believe my first exposure to "gat" was on Dre's first album...straight up homies. And GEMom2 - you were right. |

Yoss - I should have asked the same child who walked by when I was watching the YouTube video to check my facts pre-post - he would have known the difference as he is a huge History Channel/Discovery Channel fan. He has an extensive collection of history books (yes, books) - including most of the Time-Life WWII series purchased at the GEPL book sale that he's read.
This reminds me of a "Seinfeld" episode where George whines "I always wanted to be a "buff" of something. What's it take to be a buff?" And Jerry replies, "First, you have to sleep less than 18 hours a day." JRP - so according to the website - I was originally right, because it has been historically used incorrectly??! Works for me! |

I knew I could find it. This stuff is just pure poetry....it just writes itself.

Nothing embarasses your kids more quickly than talking "street" - even in the confines of your own lovely home. I keep threatening to do the Soulja Boy "Crank That" dance in front of their friend just to keep them in line!

You hangin with K-Fed now?
He's only slightly cooler than Clam. "Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains." (Winston Churchill) |

I was fifteen when this stuff came out. I'll never forget the first time I tried playing it in a car with my Dad...needless to say, it was the last. Those were the golden days of rap when Dre, Snoop and Warren G were collaborating on such songs...ah, the golden days. And now that you mention it, Clam and K-Fed both have a lot in common. For one, they both have two boys to take care of that are injured quite often. |

My, but you are young, Mr. Potts. The "golden days" of gangsta rap were the N.W.A days. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. And gat was being tossed around before Snoop was no bigger than Kriss Kross. From the album, Straight Outta Compton
For full disclosure, I generally hate rap. Hate the lack of musical ability, hate the cheap shock value, hate the message, hate the effect. Had a college roommate who loved it. |

I will admit to liking some of the Beastie Boys.

How dare you leave 2LifeCrew off the list. We are speaking of the same golden age...it was just 8 years long. |

Potts, I know less about rap than...well, anyone. But I do know that if Luther heard you refer to 2LiveCrew that way he would be giving you a beatdown you would not soon forget. Word This message has been edited. Last edited by: Ruydah, |

Clam - Here's your chance to make a global linguistic mark - "bizzos" is not a defined word on urbandictionary.com - yet. And yes, I suspected the definition from context, but was looking for verification . . . .

Ruydah, if you are going to correct Potts on his use of 2Lifecrew, at least get the correct picture of Luther on your post.....I know Luther Campbell, and that is not Luther Campbell...

Uh-oh - upon further review, the singular "bizzo" is defined as one who is both a b**ch and a ho. Be careful when using an unfamiliar vernacular!
