Apparently high school girls are the same BB, would it help if I brought you a beer? "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. Maybe they could have a camp-out at Prairie Path Park - then they'd be nice and close - and awake!!

The clean-up was so much fun! It was nice seeing everyone. Welcome to the two merchants who volunteered with us today. I hope that you will join us on GEBB!
I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world. |

Pete/Amy-Great job of pulling this together.
Overall things didn't look too bad, except for cigarette butts-they were everywhere. Smokers if you wonder why society is turning on you, just look under your feet at how many of your butts litter America. Check out how many have accumulated at intersections then explain to me why you think the world is your ashtray? BTW-Did anybody get a count of how many participants were there from the Civic Betterment Party? "Deck the halls..." |

While I didn't arrive until the sweeping and cleaning was done, I did witness an interesting street scene:
An SUV pulled up to let people out in front of the theater. When the back door opened, garbage spilled into the street. Fast food wrappers, a water bottle and other litter was strewn on the street. The passenger chucked some back into the car, but left some behind. There was a trash can a few feet away. Like the green and clean team motto says: Put Litter In Its Place! (Please) And yes, the litter they left was picked up by the volunteers. |

Mom2 as you noted when the trash fell out of the SUV, that the inside of the vehicle was quite messy. Wonder what the inside of their house looks like?

Sleep-deprived new parents get a pass on hazing.
Thanks to everyone! Things are definitely improving downtown and I was really happy with the speedy response of our men in blue when we called to report several instances of grafitti. Hopefully the building owners will get those nasty little bits cleaned up. The south side of the tracks still needs some attention. I'm all for continuing our cleanup because it really is fun but we need to get something to the village about getting a bigger plan in place that isn't so dependent on a few individuals who care. I plan to write a letter to the editor of several papers and publicize a petition asking the village to get on the stick with this. Is there anyone that knows how to do these online petitions? BTW, I appreciate that there were several people tied to the village that did show up and I hope we can find a nice way of thanking our sidewalk steam cleaner. That was great! Candidate, Scotty, Yossarian, Perplexed, Shore Thing, Yigo, Clam, you're all GREAT! Who am I forgetting? I know there were some non-BB people too but I think I'm forgetting some BB'ers from today.... Sorry, I got distracted when the Civic Betterment Party came by to offer their thanks & gratitude. Seriously though, I don't know if I feel comfortable continuing to do a monthly cleaning of our CBD. I think it's great that we raise awareness, but this morning there was no coverage by the media, which leads me to think we are losing site of our goal-The village of GE, property/business owners taking responsibility for the CBD. We had two business owners helping this morning and I take my hat off to them This village administration needs to step up in so many areas, one of which is the cleanliness of the CBD. IMO-Leadership is defined by deeds; Pete Ladesic is the only one who has put his money where his mouth is, figuratively & literally. Are the other trustees and our Village President waiting for, TBS to tell them it's dirty? Sorry, my friends but I'm not going to do the village's job for them anymore, it just feels like were enabling. Next thing you know, Miss Vicki will take credit for the cleaner CBD "Deck the halls..." |

Nice meeting those of you who participated today. D**m those smokers!
I think I agree with Candidate that we should continue this a bit longer … monthly for a few months. I think we need to get a feeling for how bad the problem is over time. There may be too much for the village and store owners to realistically handle. For instance, if after one month there are once again 1,000 cigarette butts at the train station, perhaps we need to find a permanent citizen solution. If that turns out to be the case, perhaps a neighborhood or an organization such as a church could adopt an area and tend to it once a month. I bet that Perplexed and I could recruit some of our neighbors to commit to sprucing up the train station monthly. Or Candidate and I could recruit some members of our church mission trip team. |

Although I missed the last one due to some "scheduling conflicts" and this past one due to some "family planning conflicts", I agree that this should continue - at least a couple more months. Awareness of the problem takes time. My bet, GoDowntown would be more than happy to publicize the clean-up effort. Maybe make it on a weeknight to draw more attention.
Yoss, I agree, on more occasions than I can count, I've asked myself why citizens of this town should be required to "take matters into their own hands" in order to ensure that things are done up to par and up to the standards of honesty and taste that we deserve. I've said to myself numerous times, "self, why do you care...why don't you just stop." Each time, after some thinking, I've been reminded that if each person felt that way and failed to take any steps to right wrongs or advocate for their position, nothing would ever get done. While it is true that it is not our "responsibility" to clean the downtown, if we don't do it, nobody will do it. And if we do it enough times, maybe the rightful parties will start doing it. I commend those of you who got up and "did it"...and the Village should and will eventually....it just may take some time. "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |
