Surely the village can afford one of these.
If not, How about one of these? I know we have one like this. I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. Ayn Rand Anthem |

Wow! Gem and I agree on something. I was thinking exactly the same thing yesteday. |

That's what I had in mind too.

The Glenbard West Eco Club would like to participate in the next clean-up. They said if you want more than 2 to show up the start time needs to be changed to 8:00 am (really).
They even have a logo... |

I'm all for that! I do think we should have one more like mid-day for visibility. I could be there and try to organize some free food again on Saturday, June 14th. Sunday the 15th is Father's Day so that's probably not a good choice and the following week is bad for me....would others be able to attend the 14th????

No, I can't make it on the 14th. Sunday is a better day for me to do this. Sundays in general are good, Saturdays are always heavily scheduled.

I agree with the mid-day visibility Amy, but the cleanup is truly the responsibility of the Village Public Works. Several years ago, they kept the streets relatively clean. In the past few years they have just neglected them (this also includes clearing ice and snow) It is much different than clearing the walk in-front of your home. The traffic is much denser and the littering problem is just a constant maintenance issue. I have seen business owners sweeping their walk, but as you know from your last cleanup it only last a few hours. Last week I observed a village employee roto-tilling the four small flowerbeds at Main and the RR Tracks. She was at this for no less than four days. Each flowerbed is about 12x7. Apparently she is an hourly employee and had very little incentive to "get er done" and move onto the next project. If people wish to donate their services, I would prefer to see them creating charming little garden spaces around town (hint. . . .hint) than spending their time cleaning up after perpetual inconsiderate slobs. The flowerbeds were so much nicer when they were maintained by local clubs and organizations. They were even allowed to put a little sign up advertising their organization. Wouldn't it be nice if public works actually did public works? Its almost June and I'm still running over potholes. Speaking of which, why haven't the flowers been planted yet? Are they waiting for the July sales? Other towns, like Elmhurst have had theirs planted weeks ago.
True dat! Our streets suck. "You shouldn't soil your Sunday pants, like those other foolish ants." |

GEM, we did do some gardening last time. Perhaps you should help out and you would know that. I have never for one moment said that public works needs to do more. I still have my letter with a relatively small number of signatures. I know that the Glen Ellyn News is writing a story about our cleanup and they asked for the letter, which I provided. Maybe if we set our next cleanup day and let people know they can sign the letter, we will get a lot more people and signatures. I view this volunteer work - at this level and frequency as a temporary thing until we can light a fire under our village administration.
How about Sunday, June 8th at 3pm? Everyone can clean and/or garden and then perhaps we can all go out for dinner afterwards...? If I can get commitments from some of you, I'll contact the writer from the GE News and ask him to publicize that date. "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real state, but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith. " -Bertrand Russell V. Delong |

Amy, If I wanted to clean streets and plant flowers I could have just skipped school and grabbed a cushy government gig! I'm not too keen on doing the work someone else is/has been paid to do. If we let it go long enough, we can just shovel the walks year round! Wouldn't it make a nice front page photo of a toddler knee high in starbucks cups and cigarette butts with overflowing trash bins as a background? Every time you clean up the walks, you are sending a message to the Village, because they aren't getting your point. You are empowering them to neglect the walks.
Every time you clean up, that is one less time they will, or one less complaint phoned into city call. If you have the urge to clean up again, don't throw it away. Carry all the bags of crap to the next village meeting and spill it on the floor for all to see! That surely would get you the press you desire! (may also land you in the slammer, but I'll start a collection to get you out! Anybody know any good lawyers?? Ron? Fan?) I'll tell ya, GEM. You wield a mean power washer. You'd be an asset to the team.

I really like that word. . . "Asset" That's the nicest thing you have ever called me! But I'm still not cleaning! This message has been edited. Last edited by: GEM, I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. Ayn Rand Anthem |

I've never called you names. You seem like a nice enough chap. And I understand your reluctance to help. Really is a job that the village should be doing. Period. Case in point. I liberated a rusty old abandoned bike during the last clean up. Put it somewhere where the village could not possibly miss it. Right at the east egress of the commuter lot in front of SBUX. One week later...still sitting there. No way could this thing be mistaken for anything other than discarded garbage. So yesterday it was picked up and safely placed on top of a garbage can in front of The Glen. Subsequently, someone else moved it so that it is hanging by a pedal off of the same can. We'll see if it disappears tomorrow. Just shameful. I will go out on a limb and guess that our gettin'-things-done village president hasn't visited the CBD in quite some time. She is clueless to its condition. How the hell you miss a rusty old bike for 7 days is beyond me. |

I'm sure it's still there. And knowing how this village maintains the center stone of this Crown Jewel..you'll have ample opportunity to rescue it. Not sure if Rich can save it. It's in pretty rough shape.
