For those members of the community South of Roosevelt, please be on the lookout or ask around about the petition that is being spread concerning Peace Lutheran Church wanting to move in across the street.
Petitions are being signed and will be directed to the Village concerning the location of this church and it's intent to offer homeless services, including overnight accomodations. A few months back the rumor was that this was all dead and over, but after last night's open house meeting it seems that it may be untrue. The house on the property has been fenced off for demolition for several weeks. So if you are concerned with this type of function being held near one of our education facilities, look for the petition to sign. "Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front shoulda told ya." |

SOT,
I feel for you folks. I've been doing nothing but griping about our homeless problem for a while. It's growing, yet people continue to support PADS in one way or another. Nothing good can come from a permanent shelter locating across from a grade school. Not only that, but GE basbeall schedules it's 2nd grade ball games at Glen Crest throughout the weekends in spring/summer. I too thought this had been put to rest. Did you happen to read the article about the murder that took place in Hanover Park last Thursday? Homeless man charged for Hanover Park murder. If you need help, please let me know. To bring you up to date a little about this issue...There is currently a petiton going around stating that we want the Village to be open with it's dealing with the public with it's dealings with Peace Lutheran Church and the property that it has bought across from Glen Crest Middle School. Word around on this end of town is that this is NOT happening with us. As honest as a church should be, they can say that they will not be housing any homeless programs and turn around and do it anyway because nothing is holding them to their promise, legally or morally.
It is asking for all meetings to be held during the school year and that every Dist 89 school be duely notified of each meeting, seeing that every 89 student will eventually attend Glen Crest. It is asking that any meetings be held during the school year, so as administration from schools and parents will be able to attend. An additional item is requesting that the Village consider creating a mandate that no homeless sheltering body can be within 1/2 mile of a school institution. Being a former member of Peace I want to trust that they are truly working on the up and up, but with the current administration in town I just don't know what to expect. "Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front shoulda told ya." |

Good luck with this, but my money says that the church goes there and eventually opens a permanent shelter. Its only a matter of time, especially if they already own the property. Does anyone know whether these church's are being paid by the state for providing overnight shelters to the homeless? Or is this completey on their dime?
