"Welcome Back to Another Great Year in District 89! While students are enjoying the final days of summer vacation, teachers in District 89 are busy preparing their classrooms for another great year. Many teachers attended training seminars and classes over the summer to improve their teaching techniques. The entire District 89 staff is energized and excited about the beginning of a new school year.
August is also an exciting time for students. When students return to their schools, they will encounter new teachers and a new level of content and rigor in their coursework. Many facility improvements occurred over the summer months. The first phase of improvements that were made possible through the passage of the referendum was completed at all of the schools. Improvements to roofs, lighting systems, technology infrastructure, parking lots and sidewalks were completed on time and under budget. These improvements, especially those tied to technology, will enhance teaching and learning throughout District 89 and extend the usefulness of our facilities for years to come.
As you know, the summer's work also included an extensive restoration project at Briar Glen Elementary School, which suffered a roof fire on July 18. About a third of the building sustained significant smoke and water damage, and many classrooms had to be completely gutted and restored. Detailed fact sheets about the restoration effort are posted on the District 89 web site (www.ccsd89.org). We are thrilled to report that school at Briar Glen will start on time. Representatives from the Regional Office of Education inspected the building on Friday and granted clearance for occupancy.
Briar Glen families are invited to a building walk through on Sunday evening, August 24, from 4:00 - 5:00 pm to see this amazing restoration work. District 89 is truly fortunate to have such dedicated professionals who worked relentlessly long hours on a very tight schedule to ensure Briar Glen's school year would not be delayed, and that student/staff safety would not be compromised in any way. We graciously thank all who have helped in this effort.
Welcome back to this promising new school year. As always, I thank you for supporting Learning for Life in District 89!"
