I think you all are holding the Glen Ellyn Police to an unusually high standard. First off, let me say that I think it would be an excellent idea for the police to have an officer walking a beat in the CBD on Thursday afternoon, Friday morning, Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. I’ll bet that this is something that can be arranged and implemented by the police at the request of its citizens.

But as far as jumping all over the police because they are a reactive rather than proactive agency? Come on . . . I can’t believe you really expect the police to be so proactive - they aren’t omnipotent. They come when they are called. They rely on the citizens to call when a party gets too loud, when there is vandalism, when your car gets broken into or whenever any other problems arise. Even the person who complained about their van being ticketed noted that a neighbor called to complain.

Calling the police and not having them come out is a different story; they should answer each and every call; maybe not with speeding cars and flashing lights, but the police should be responsive to the people.

Expecting them to monitor every restaurant/business in town 24 hours a day for smoking violations is a bit of a stretch though. It’s up to the building tenant or an affected citizen to say - move away from the building or I’m calling the police.

So, I don't understand....what should they be doing while they are waiting for the phone to ring?

I agree and have always had nothing but the utmost respect for the GEPD...with the possible exception of their slovenly response to that pit bull incident...and, oh yeah, being told that I have prurient interests in the suffering of nine year-old girls by the Chief of Police. But I have to disagree with one thing. If we, the taxpayers of Glen Ellyn, have provided the police with cars that are capable of being speedy and light bars that are capable of flashing and/or strobing....then yes, they should be utilized in such a manner. Fast cars and flashing lights are totally cool.

Is this a real question? Do you think that there is no office work involved in being a police officer? Or that they do not have meetings to attend, follow up activities and other regular and recurring duties like every person who is gainfully employed?

I believe that M2C has a point. Too much paperwork and meetings to keep up on our unmanageable crime wave aside, there should be plenty of time to have an officer on foot milling about the CBD a few days a week. I understand that this might take precious manpower away from trying stem the tide of disappearing vodka from the Baker Hill Dominicks (have they ever considered a sliding gate to keep the folk out after hours?)...but I'm willing to take that risk. Safeway stock can handle the loss. Our stock as a community cannot.

The police (typically the DARE officers) are out in pairs on early dismissal days for D41. You know, those junior high kids leaving their cigarette butts all over and taking a crap behind the Glen really needs to be monitored.... Roll Eyes

In case my point isn't clear, if they can be out on those days, they can be out on the days we are talking about.

Let's get real...PUBLIC SAFETY (which is what taxpayers pay for) and crime prevention go hand in hand. I know very well that paperwork is a part of their job but let's prioritize for the good of the community.

It's readily apparent that your holdings do not include Safeway...is that correct, Amy? Otherwise you would be much more understanding of the massive and repeated presence at that store. In hindsight...I guess you never really said anything about the Dominicks store, did you?

BTW, on a separate note...is there ever a time when that store is not completely empty? And is there ever a time when the only line open isn't the express lane? Maybe I'm going at the wrong times, but for years I had thought that they built that store exclusively for my personal use.

Less collection of the traffic taxes

More policing of the CBD

Honestly, I'd rather have all the paperwork completed in a timely manner than waste valuable human resources on making sure that smokers are exactly X ft (not X minus one ft.) away from the entrance of a building.

I wasn't talking about smokers...I was talking about the people who are victimizing the community by stopping traffic and asking for money. It's a safety hazard as well as a nuisance.

Wait mam...is that really a complaint people have in GE? Or is it the human fecal matter piling up in our alleys?

This really strikes a nerve with me, the way in so many respects our town will only enforce laws if somebody complains?

So true... same as the smoking. They won't enforce the smoking laws until someone complains...by the time they could actually see the person smoking they'd be done. Pathetic...

Did I imagine this post?

F smoking laws. It is every man's duty to enforce those laws in a vigilante style. If someone is smoking too close to you...physically push them away. If a chap drops a fag butt on the pathway...pick it up and burn his face with it. You don't need any stinkin' badges for that.
