Mark Pfefferman in his state of the village speech declared that the state of the village was sound.
Now the finance chief was quoted as saying that the village barely has it head above water. So which is it? |

What were the circumstances surrounding the comments?

The Village Finance chief was quoted in one of the local papers. Believe it was in last weeks Trib supplement.
I believe he was discussing village finances. Seems at a certain level there is a slight disconnect between Mr. Pfefferman and the village finance chief. |

From the Glen Ellyn News - sounds a teeny bit different here:

Not wanting to speak for Pfefferman, Batek or Parker (the finance guru...not my wife)...but...isn't this kind of normal scenario? Especially in tough times? Doesn't seem all that exciting. Villages are constantly looking under the cushions for dimes and cutting expenses to stay ahead of the game.
I assume one of those three guys will address this. |

Good morning!
Thank you for posting these comments. They are important to me. The State of the Village address highlighted that budget cuts, including five positions, were made in April 2009 and $440,000 more made last fall. It also hightlighted significant spending of reserves, albeit about $900,000 less than anticipated. The Home Rule Sales Tax revenue stream was also highlighted. I am not being defensive - while Jon and village management work quite closely with the board - there very well may be a disconnect, . I offer the information above to try to answer any concerns you may have. What other areas do you feel are not in concert? Next fiscal year's budget discussions start Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Galligan conference room on the 3rd floor of the Civic Center and continue for the next two months. The proposed budget, part one, is also available online at glenellyn.org. It is quite detailed (and long! Thank you for your interest and concern. Sincerely, Mark Mark Pfefferman |

If we allowed video poker, any guess on what tax revenues that would generate?
It's the spending, Stupid! |

DTM - before we passed the ordinance prohibiting it, the village management team polled the businesses that would be eligible to offer video poker and only one expressed an interest in having it. Had we agreed to allow it, the tax revenue from this one establishment would have been minimal.
