Seems like a reasonable request.

How can a reporter be so wrong?

At what point was razing Stacy's Tavern and erecting a Jimmy John's ever an option? I have always be skeptical about anything that I read in the local press . . . now I know why. People think we are crazy in GE:

"Am I missing something here? Probably, since this is the first I have heard of this story (don't live in GE but grew up there). We are talking about Stacy's Tavern - a building that has more history oozing out of its wood pores than 90% of the structures in the area. And some commission thinks it should be a strip mall? Really? I'm sickened by that, and thankful it didnt go that way. I guess the concept that it was even up for consideration is what really irks me. I completely understand that municipalities everywhere are hurting for cash, I get that, but the LAST thing that should ever be of issue is a historic structure like Stacy's Tavern. I don't know about serving beer there (interesting idea!) - but I have always thought that it could be put to better use than it is. Someone out there with a creative mind should be able to come up with a plan that would not only allow the building to survive, but to prosper for generations to come. It is a historic treasure - treat it with the respect that it deserves, not as a commodity to be part of a stupid commission report."

I say refurbish it and make it an actual working tavern, at least there would be some revenue generated.

And why the heck can't we get rid of the Marathon station at 5 Corners?

Re: Today's story

First, a quick explanation of my mistake: It was my mistake. Period. During the editing process of my story, we went back and forth on the focus of it. Now, I don't use "editing process" as a vague way of deflecting blame. Rest assured, I looked at the final version of the story and having been swimming in notes and double checking all day, I gave the OK without double checking that final time. I had emails saying some groups were concerned with a strip mall coming to Stacy's Corners. With those notes at my desk, I thought I'd known the notes well enough and thought it was Stacy's Tavern. In fact, if I had checked that email one last time, I would have seen that it was the lot east of the museum, which we wrote later in the story. Those things were confused (by me) and I made the mistake of, as I said, not double checking one final time. For this, I apologize and it will be corrected both online and with a correction in print.

Second, I appreciate boards like this and am on here frequently just to get a sense of what is going on in Glen Ellyn. Having been at this for about a year now, I can tell that people on this board care about what is going on in town. When I screw up a story about Glen Ellyn, to me I screw up the trust that might have been built and that is one thing I get queasy about.

Finally, I'm not one to spar publicly on these things. I post this to assure you that nobody is sicker about this mistake than I am. However, I also understand that people have concerns with the local press. We may not be the Washington Post or New York Times but, at least for me, there is no excuse for not being as accurate as they are. I have a lot of respect for the press (obviously) and when something I do dents its or my newspaper's reputation, it bugs the hell out of me. So, if you do want to discuss anything pertaining to this story, the press or Glen Ellyn, feel free to contact me directly at msantana@dailyherald.com. This includes any future mistakes I might make - although I hope you never find another one. Smile

Thank you for reading this post and thank you for reading the Daily Herald. I hope this error doesn't cause you to stop turning to us, at least occasionally, to find out what is going on in town.

My hat is off to you, Marco. Good job . . . make that excellent job at explaining and rectifying the situation. We all make mistakes. Few of us know how to apologize for them or fix them.

Thanks.

I'm confused. The article mentions the historical society in par. 1, and the finance commission in par. 3. Then in pars. 4 and 5, it refers to "the commission" donating a portion of "its property" to the village to "pay the village back." Par. 6 refers to the historical society.

Did/does the village's finance commission own property?

Also, a map sure would have been of assistance in understanding this article - or at least a photo showing the area in question.

I dont' think Stacy's Tavern was ever a tavern in the modern sense of the word but it was an inn/place of lodging. So, turning it into a tavern (in the modern sense of the word) would not accurately reflect what it was.

In earlier America, the word tavern was used to denote an establishment that provided lodging and food. This also included drink such as ale.

I visited the new Historical Society Shop at five corners and was pleasantly surprised. I actually purchased a few items and found the prices to be very reasonable. They feature several G.E. artisans, which I think is quite cool. They had a large section for baby gifts, books about G.E., pictures, Amish products as well as some antiques and of course the required candles and knick-knacks. I understand they plan on bringing in more antiques. All in all, a nice gift shop. I will return. Hope you give it a look.
