Unnecessary, repetitive and redundant quote removed. --Ted E.

I'm a renter, so I don't believe this particular situation actually applies to me....but for you to assume that anyone can afford that is preposterous. That's exactly the kind of myopic thinking that causes those less fortunate to hold grudges against towns like ours.

I love this town, but sometimes the "snobby" people in it irritate me. I realize that GE is a town filled with well-off residents, but there are quite a few who go virtually unnoticed....those who live paycheck to paycheck (and not due to mismanaged funds)....those who struggle to make their monthly rent or mortgage payments....those who don't have family nights out that cost a week's worth of minimum wage pay....

Perhaps in the future, before making assumptions you'll think things through a bit more....

I think I'm confused here - $95 (and tax deductible at that) is a lot less expensive than the normal taxes associated with a fire protection district. And, I rented for 25 years - you do end up paying one way or the other - directly, as a owner, or in how your landlord determines that rents should be, to cover his costs.

And, FWIW, not a lot of money here, and a big night out is Wendy's, with a splurge on a frosty! Smile

I agree some folks, both in and out of GE proper, should step up and pay their fair share of fire protection....I'm always a little appalled at how many opf my neighbors skip the fire and the auto sticker payments. But, I figure, karma will get them some day.

A $95 tax deduction doesn't really effect those in my bracket. As for the paying one way or the other, it's just like property taxes....they're figured into my rent and I don't worry about it.

I just get incredibly frustrated with people such as Mrs Arten, who use phrases like "To those who say they can't afford to contribute...try skipping one night out with the family". Some people actually don't do those things and CAN'T afford to contribute. It's offensive for someone to make a generalizing public statement berating one's financial management abilities.

Find me an apartment with a landlord like mine and rent like mine in another place and I'd be happy to. I didn't move to Glen Ellyn for any other reason than I found an apartment that I could afford with a landlord that I liked. Two rarities in the rental world. And if you're looking to eliminate low-income households from GE, rally to have taxes raised so that landlords can't afford to rent cheap. Then you wouldn't have to worry about people who can't afford those things, now would you?

If you're truly rich and in a fire hazard area you get your own privately funded (insurance agency) fire department. Saw it in the WSJ awhile back. Causing quite a stir out west.

"Well sir, I know your house is about to burn down, but our firetrucks are here to protect your neighbors house"

Are you saying we have substandard fire protection in Glen Ellyn?
