A question for you long time Glen Ellyn residents. Has there ever been any discussions about developing the bog in Glen Ellyn Manor (Newton & Illinois) into a passive park. It just seems like a neglected area that is a prime place for a passive park/pond/recreation area that would be an asset to the manor residents.

Just wondering...thanks.

It looks more like the original plan was to develop the area; you can see rusty fire hydrant mains - with hydrants running through the area. There also appear to be storm sewers in place. My guess, based upon the settlement I saw walking through a hillcrest house for sale a couple of years ago, is that the soil was determined to be prohibitive for standard home foundations. But that's just a guess.

It does serve as a passive park, if I understand your term correctly. There is a wood-chipped circle trail with spurs kicking out to the nearby streets. I've walked through there a number of times with the kiddies, it's a nice little "preserve". I'm not sure residents would like the idea of a mosquito producing bog. I believe it already serves as an intermittent wetland and is buggy enough.

The storm sewers are from the 1920's when the US army corp of engineers drained the swamp and turned it into a damp bog. The fire hydrants are in case the peat bog underground catches on fire. They only way to put it out would be to turn on all the hydrants and leave them on until the fire underground goes out.

There was some talk of burning down all the weed trees so that all that remained were the hard woods (maple/ash) and then planting praire grass there.

The village doesn't maintain it unless the manor residents ask them to and help out. Every other year the neighborhood has to volunteer to spread wood chips on the path, the city donates them, but doesn't help for some reason.

It's the spending, Stupid!
