Glen Ellyn lost a great one last week.

Katharine F. (Kay) Storm died after complications from a fall. She was 88.

Kay was a great leader in our village for half a century. She founded the popular AAUW book sale that has become a tradition here. She was president of the AAUW, and served on the Glen Ellyn Board of Trustees. She also served on the Board of College of DuPage. Kay was a 50-year member of First Congregational Church where she volunteered as Finance Secretary (Treasurer) for many years and founded the mission where members prepared meals, etc., for fellow parishoners in need.

Kay met her husband of 54 years, Bob, at Northwestern University when he, working as a waiter, dropped a plate of spagetti on her only cashmere sweater. They were married at the height of WWII when he was on a three-day military leave. Their children, Bill and Kathy, are graduates of Glenbard West.

Kay received a swimming scholarship to her college and was nominated anonymously for recognition as a Person of Character in our town. She received this honor in 2004. She also was awarded the YWCA Outstanding Woman Leadership Award and The Adele Wheeler Award.

She was intelligent, opinionated and fun. She never stopped caring about our village. She gave sage advice on nearly every major decision the village faced, including the floral clock, proposed Main Street development, and the downtown vacancy rate. Then and now, we could use more leaders like her.

Many considered Kay the first lady of Glen Ellyn. Many were right.

I've met and talked with Kay on many occaisions. I have been a member of AAUW for some time and that is how I first met her. I also attend First Con. You have written a very fitting tribute. Perhpas I know you too!

Come on Amy, given this type of writing, you have to know who 4MP is. Never heard the man say a negative word...ever.

That's because he says them about you not to you.

Kay Storm was a really cool lady, sort of like the person I would like to be if I ever decide to grow up. GE will miss her wit and intelligence!!!

To even be compared with Kay is truly an honor...do I know you? I can't remember if I've met you at any BB events. The fact that you know so much about Kay tells me you must be a pretty outstanding individual as well.

And Fish, thank you for not slaughtering me for transposing letters in my last post! Smile

Potts, if you know 4MP, I'm thinking you'll have to tell me since we're neighbors!

MP - I will not disclose your identity to Amy unless you authorize me to do so. That being said, since Amy lives on Western, she should love your thoughts on the street....not so much your thoughts on Fish's former street. Wink

If there were more people like you in GE...the village would be a much better place. And that isn't a joke.

You boys must have been tipping back some holiday cheer last night. Kay would have liked that, too!

I doubt I would be disappointed - particularly since Clam and Potts have such high opinions of you.

Speaking of tipping back, I think we are due for a BB bar outing! What say ye, folks!???

I'm in...so long as I don't have to show up. I always get stuck with the bill.

You can hoist one in Kay's honor.
