Good morning,

The village has experienced some weather related issues this morning.

First, a weather alert siren was set off at about 9:15 a.m. Thankfully, it turned out that the storm was well south of Glen Ellyn, in northern Will County.

Just after this, lightening struck a transformer on Hill Avenue. A good portion of the village, including the Civic Center, is without power. ComEd and the village management team are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

I will try to provide more information as updates become available. You may still call the village for the latest info at 630-469-5000.

Thank you,

Mark

Hello,

Here is the latest update about the power outage in our village:

After about an hour without power, the Civic Center's generator power was activated via the hard work of the village's Police Department and Information Technology associates. The lights, power and computers are now fine at the Civic Center, so cusomers can conduct normal village business should they need to.

The scope of the village's outage appears to be south of the tracks, north of Hill, east of Prospect and west of Park. Com Ed is working to restore power to this area.

Thank you,

Mark

I am sure Mark would have liked to keep you updated on the more recent power outages but the last I heard from him he was without power himself.
There are scattered outages still around town from the second wave of storms. Unfortunately one of those is in the area of Smith and Grandview.
Who said elected officials get special treatment?

We got our power back around 11:45 pm. We have friends on Indian DR that still don't have power.

Good morning,

An official response from ComEd is expected soon and after noon today, but so far, this is what I know:

About 1000 residences in Glen Ellyn and Wheaton are still without power. Due to the severe weather in Lake County, a limited number of ComEd crews are working to restore power in our area. I have personally witnessed three. Police and public works are out in the neighborhoods.

The Glen Ellyn website should be updated shortly. www.glenellyn.org.

I have heard two expected resolution times - one is today - early afternoon. The other is tomorrow. We are trying to get the most accurate information and get it to the public.

Thank you,

Mark

Hello,

Here is some of the official information from ComEd, and the villages Public Works and Police Department:

Power Outage - ComEd is reporting a power outage affecting approximately 1200 Glen Ellyn customers along the Hill Avenue corridor. There were also pockets of outage in along Riford/Crescent and in south Glen Ellyn. ComEd has crews in the area and they are working to restore power to those customers affected. They expect to complete this work by 5:00 PM today. For the most current status of the restoral efforts any interested parties can contact ComEd directly at 1-800-EDISON-1.

At the same time, Public Works has three crews out clearing brush. They believe they are about 80 percent through the town. They anticipated wrapping up around 1pm. At that point they will have all hazards cleared and sidewalks passable as long as wires are not involved. There still have a tree blocking the cul-de-sac on Wilson Avenue as there are wires involved. A street sweeper is out clearing the race route in anticipation of tomorrow's run and many other areas.

Please see the village's website, www.glenellyn.org, under the "latest news" tab for further updates.

Thank you,

Mark

Hello,

The latest update from ComEd (according to ComEd outage website and confirmation with the ComEd External Affairs Manager):

A new power outage was reported for Glen Ellyn at 2:55 p.m. affecting nearly 3,800 Glen Ellyn residents from Hill Avenue to the south village limits. The Estimated Restore Time (ERT) is 8:00 p.m.

The original 1,200 customer outage is showing an ERT of 4:30 p.m.

The village Public Works update is that crews have completed brush clearing of all roadways and sidewalks reported that do not have electrical wires among them. Approximately six to 10 sites exist with wires. Crews will be in tomorrow if the sites have been cleared for cleanup by ComEd. Sunday's race route has been street swept and is ready for tomorrow morning.

A Public Works crew continues to manually pump the Memory Court Lift Station as power has not been restored to this site.

Residents should bring storm brush to the parkway. A supplemental pickup will be planned for this week. Depending on the extent of the brush, either Public Works or a private contractor will perform the pickup.

As of this posting, some power has been restored on Ott Avenue and ComEd crews are working on Hill Avenue to repair a feeder that was down and arcing.

The village website - www.glenellyn.org - latest news section will continue to be updated and information is also available on radio station 1620 AM. For the most current status of the restoral efforts residents can also contact Commonwealth Edison directly at 1-800-EDISON-1.

Thank you,

Mark

The water tower by YMCA is discharging excess water into the local neighborhood...3 back yards have water streaming across them and in to the street (Illinois). They said they had contacted the village, but were waiting for someone to come take care of the problem, but that was over half an hour ago...

Thank you for the 411 DTM. The situation is being looked into.

Here is the lastest statement:

As of 7:30 P.M. on Saturday, Com Ed is reporting that many residents have restored power in Glen Ellyn. Individuals are encouraged to call 1-800-Edison-1 for individual address updates. Com Ed’s tree trimming crews are still in the area clearing branches from power lines so electrical service repairs may be completed. Some estimates for repair are now as late as 6:00 PM Sunday evening.

Please place all storm-related brush in the parkway in front of your home. The Village is planning a supplemental brush and branch pick-up for the week of June 22.

If you observe a power line down in your neighborhood, please call 9-1-1 and do not go near the line.

If you are without power into the evening hours, please call 630-469-1187, so the Police are aware of your specific area and can provide extra patrols.

Thank you.

Mark

To DTM:

Apparently, the village's SCADA system (which controls the water towers) was also affected by the power outage. The water system was pumping water into the Newton reservoir which in turn was overflowing. Public Works was on site for the entire evening. The power was restored at 9:25 p.m. Public Works was able to get the pumping to cease at around 9:15 p.m. and now the situation under control.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for checking into this. I was worried when I walked down there and didn't see anyone on site. The neighbors said they called the village and were told they had to wait for someone to get a key to the building. I hope none of the water made it to a window well for any of those homeowners...it was unbelievable the amount of water pouring across their yards and nearby Manor Park.

Fan,

Just a guess, but I don't think Glen Ellyn has it's own 911 system - I think that's run by the County.

...and as for the power - that's ComEd. If we wanted more reliable electrical service, I believe we'd have to bury the power lines (as many newer communities are doing...), but that would take a hefty special assessment...

And as for the Public Works people - how many of these "paid employees" do we have? With a major storm like this, can't they just get off their butts and be everywhere doing everything for everyone at once? I'm sure it's been a slightly busy weekend for them (as it has no doubt been for every community in the path of these storms - probably explains why the 911 system was swamped, as well...).

Give them a Break.

(Of course, if I worked for the Village, I know whose street would get bumped to the bottom of MY priorities list...).

Fan,

It's so refreshing having a Village President and trustees that aren't part of our local government. Kudos to Mark for keeping us updated. I'd say that our village kept us well-informed. Yes, if nobody had informed us, then nobody would have informed us.

It's amazing that otherwise rational people don't grasp the concept that every system has a point of being overwhelmed. If we plan for that one rare occasion when it happens, that probably would mean adding an additional hundred 911 operators at a sizeable expense. If that's what you want, be prepared to pay for it. The rest of the time, it appears to work pretty well. And again, it's not a Village enterprise. It's the county.

I find in village affairs that it's the exceptions to the daily workings that get criticized as the norm, not the actual daily norms themselves. I hope others will note the presence of the public works crews (who have been working nonstop...) who were not running around aimlessly or at the garage drinking coffee and keeping dry.

Of course, if you'd like to push for the doubling in size of the Public Works Department to deal more effectively with the exceptional circumstance, you go for that...

Good morning.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads and your fathers as well!

ComEd crews have been out all night. Power to the Roosevelt Road corridor went out again around around 5:30 a.m. and then was restored.

There are still several areas without power. The Memory Court Lift Station also remains out of power. ERT for all these areas is between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 am today. Please continue to call 1-800-Edison-1 for the latest restoration times.

As for the posts above, both GE Fan and Wm. Schumacher are correct imho. As Ted knows, I read this board consistently with much appreciation. Along with many other sources of resident opinion, it gives us a great idea of what is on the minds of Glen Ellynites. Please keep those comments and observations coming. We live in a great community!

The Police Department and Public Works have worked long and hard to monitor and improve the outage situation. Sincere thanks to all those village employees!

Thank you,

Mark

Thanks to you Mark for all your diligence in helping the citizens of the Village. I have lived here for a long time and I don't ever remember a Village President getting involved like this. Also thanks to Candidate as he also has been very helpful in the past few years. We on the GEBB know how to vote in the great people!
