From Go Downtown from Glen Ellyn Preservation on Monday.

quote:

Dear Members and Friends:

Your attendance at tonight's Village Board meeting is important, since the Village Board will be interviewing 2 out of 4 Urban Planning and Economic Development firms (narrowed down from 17 applicants) to create a plan to revitalize downtown Glen Ellyn. This pre-board workshop will begin at 6 PM on the 3rd floor of the Glen Ellyn Civic Center and will last for 2 hours.

The two firms interviewed tonight will be:
1) Town Builder Studios located in Riverside, IL. www.townbuilderstudios.com
2) Teska Associates www.teskaassociates.com, Evanston IL

Next Monday 12-03-07 an additional two firms will be interviewed at 6 PM
3) Housel Lavigne Associates, Naperville, IL www.hlplanning.com
4) Vandewalle & Associates, Madison, WI www.vandewalle.com

There will be an opportunity for questions from the public, submitted in a written format.

Background:

* August 31, 2007 the Planning and Development Department, sent out a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) www.glenellyn.org/docs/rfq2.pdf to search for a team of consultants to lead a long range down town revitalization plan. This plan will compliment the 2001 updated Village Comprehensive Plan.
* October 1, 2007, Deadline for proposals; 17 applications received.
* Mid November 2007: A selection committee comprised of Plan Commission Chair Julie Fullerton, Architectural and Planning Consultant, Pete Pointner, Acting Village Manager Curt Barrett, Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg, Village Planner Michelle Stegall, and Staff Planner Tonja Stapleton narrowed the selection to six firms and conducted interviews and reference checks.
* Downtown Professionals Network, representing the Mainstreet Program (National Trust of Historic Preservation), was one of the top 6 firms, but did not make the final four. CGEP had featured the Mainstreet Program at our seminar in September 2007.
* November 19, 2007 The Village Selection Committee presented their recommendation of two firms to the Village Board, which they felt met their criteria and scored above the others. (Town Builder Studios and Vandewalle and Associates.) After considerable discussion, at the request of the Village board, two additional firms will be interviewed by the board. (Houseal Lavigne Associates and Teska Associates, Inc.)
* The village has budgeted $50,000 FY 07-08 and plans to budget additional amounts next year to fund the selected firm to lead a plan to revitalize our downtown.

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed.

i liked numbers 3 and 4.

check this page out from #4's web site.

good words. i'm interested in their "make it happen" part. lots of consultants hand you plans/reports w/o any implementation assistance.

#3 has some really impressive clients, including the city of geneva. see here.

i couldn't open #2's web site. not sure why.

i predict that #1 will be the low bidder.

I've dealt with 4 before - they are great.

I concur that 1 will be the low bidder.

I predict 3 will get it.

Did anyone go to the meeting and see them? Any thoughts?

really? i predict 4 will be the high bidder -- thereby eliminating them. they do, though, look the most buttoned down. but, based on the web site info only, i'd rather 3 get the gig.

Dear Village Board,

Based on nothing more than a quote in the paper, I believe you should not hire Town Builder Studios. In today's GE News TBS's economic analyst is quoted as suggesting GE needs "unique services you can't find anywhere else." His example of a possibility was a 8mm/VHS transfer to DVD business. For years now, Walgreen's has been providing this service at their photo counter, therefore, it is in no way unique. I wouldn't be surprised to find P.J.'s Camera does as well. A quick Google search finds many other options available.

One would think they brought their A-game for the presentation, and this is more like an F - for future failure.

On a cheerier note, this is an excellent idea for a Christmas gift - it is so much easier to pop in a DVD and view those long-ago 8mm recorded memories. We did this for Grandma and the siblings a few years back and they loved it.

Thanks for you time and please shop and dine in GE this holiday/Christmas!

One way to encourage shopping is to clear the sidewalks of ice. Tried to walk down Pennsylvania across from the firehouse to shop at a store on Main St. with an elderly resident of GE and slipped and slided the whole way. Most stores did use ice melt on the walkways but on Pennsylvania it was treachorous, where there were some parking spots still open. People were out and about today too. That new little bistro, "Honey" or whatever it's called, was packed. How much would it cost the village to ensure the walkways are safe to traverse?? 400 bucks?????

What in the world is going on over there on Duane?

I just got an e-mail from GoDowntown. Let me see if I get this straight. The selection is now tabled after a vote of the trustees.

Ladesic, Armstrong and Lee vote for Houseal (3 Votes for)
Norton and Comerford vote for Town Builders (2 Votes for)
Thorsell votes for Vanderwalle first but says that Houseal is her second choice (1 Vote for)

At this time, the vote is split 3-2-1-0. There is no tie.

So, our President (Hase) then votes for Town Builders to CREATE a tie. Silly me, I thought that the President only voted IN THE CASE OF A TIE. Not to CREATE the tie.

Then, since there is a "tie", the matter is tabled.

WHY?

It took all my will power to not log on last night and address her continued questionable behavior. After reading the paper and seeing what our brilliant Village President did, I wanted to come on and berate her abilities and intelligence once again. But this being the holiday season, I was sitting next to the tree and thought better of it. JRP has just reminded me that I should have said something. That something is this. 2009 cannot come soon enough for this image-battered village. The current administration has been so aloof and arrogant on so many issues that, regardless of who replaces her, it will be a win-win situation.

Also, I hope that more and more citizens step up to the plate and run as independent candidates. That has worked very well with the last one to do so, IMO. Time to make some changes at village hall and stop allowing the old school crotchety SOBs to run our community as they see fit.

Clam,

I think it is now safe to say that you won't be getting appointed to any Village commissions either. We have been blacklisted.

I am a dyslexic agnostic insomniac.
I lay awake at night wondering if there is a dog.

I do think that it is hilarious that you really have been blacklisted. For as much as the Village cries out that they need people to become involved; apparently, the must mean only the "right people."

I can't believe that you didn't even get a courtesy call.

What does that say about me? Eek

40 under 40. You're an asset to the village.

BTW, do you think she will answer your question?

Strategic Plan and the question above aside, it is important to note that many voluneers wait years before they are called to interview for village commission openings. There does not seem to be a "black list," the process as it exists is just often a lengthy one.
