I'll respectfully let the attorneys take the spefics of the situation from here, but one does not need to get village approval to tear down a house in Glen Ellyn. One does need village approval to tear down a home plaqued by village ordinance.

There was one house, I think on Prospect, that was landmarked by the Village via a formal Village ordinance that went thru the process (i.e. another village ordinance) to have the landmark status removed. They claimed economic hardship. It was later plowed under for a new house.

And then there was a house that was plaqued by the GE Historical Society, 3rd house north of Hillside on the west side of Prospect, that had the plaque plowed under with the house as the builder refused requests to return the plaque to the Historical Society.

Those involved two different groups with two totally different plaquing processes and covenants.

FWIW, this "historical" house was aluminum sided

An older home with aluminum siding may still be historically worthy if the original (cedar, etc.) siding is underneath. Many homes in the 50s and 60s were sided over with this "maintenance free" siding.

Also, one of the home on Prospect that was de-plaqued and torn-down by its owners was deemed of interest to the GEHS since the son of an early US president resided there. Perhaps someone else will remember who.

I believe that house was owned by a relation of Martin Van Buren - the eighth president of this, the greatest nation on God's green earth, and a good friend of my pal, old Hickory...

Why thankee ma'am. You know I've always believed every man has a God given right to enjoy (and sell) the produce of his own backyard still - and I be right pleased to let you have a sample some time.

But if them blasted revenuer varmints from the county come snooping around the swamp agin, why I've a right mind to show 'em the workin' end of ol' Bessie up close & personal...
