Since its founding in 1931, have any groups been organized to challenge the Civic Betterment Party candidates? Also, other then in the last election, has anyone successfully run as an independent candidate for village president or trustee? I realize you would need to be a local history buff to answer that, but does anyone know?

With the next election a year and change apart, would it behoove us to look into forming another party? So many very, very smart people live in this town. Many of whom have to be shaking their heads in disbelief today. . .yesterday. . .last month. Pick a time.

If so, what are the chances that it would accomplish anything? And what would be the goal of doing so? Sooner or later Mr. W and Mr. M and their hand-picked cronies will either move away, retire to Alabama or somewhere similar or just fade away. What is to follow after these individuals disappear? Is it just a matter of time before this town gets back on the right path? I will add that it is simply my opinion that these people polarize this village. You may disagree and I welcome your expression of opinions. Perhaps the old boys themselves would like to respond to those that read this board.

I don't believe this village deserves what it has been handed over the past decade. Last night may have been what this town needs to wake itself up and make some changes.

Personally, I think this is a good idea. If I knew more about GE and its workings and didn't have as many little kids as I do, I'd run. I'm sick of being fed $hit sandwiches. What I am good at though is the ground assault. Not afraid to go door to door, pass out literature. When you guys are ready, you let me know and I will campaign for you.

As someone who was on the CBP last election, I think that it really has its work cut out for it.

Given what has occurred lately, my confidence in it as a viable entity on a going forward basis is shaken. And truth be told, I feel a bit foolish as I was just 13 months ago trumpeting its benefits to those who had long given up on it as a useful party/process.

Ideally, it is a great party/process; however I worry that it is no longer viable given our current society and current political and social demographic.

We'll see though...

But Clamato, a separate party...horrible idea.

How horrible? And why? Just asking those in the know. And yes, it pains me to put you in that category.

It's an old clique which has outlived its usefulness. Candidates should run on their merits in an election. Not an affirmation of a caucus.

I was a member of the CBP several years ago, and I'll say that, in its defense, it was making an effort to recruit younger citizens back then; at the time I was in my late thirties, with kids in the elementary school system. I was recruited because of my age/former involvement in my school's PTA. They are - or, at least, were - a hard working, dedicated bunch of citizens. However-

I agree that the demographic of the group and its candidates still slants older, and I'm not sure if this is because older citizens are the only ones who are willing to volunteer their time, or if it's the public perception that the group is mired in the past, so nobody new even tries to volunteer. And, too, when I was a member, it was very hard for newer - you could say younger - citizens who wanted to run to get a fair hearing when they came before the nominating committee. I don't mean that people were blacklisted or anything - I just mean the makeup of the nominating committee was such that unless you had decades of experience/family in Glen Ellyn, you just weren't going to capture most of the members' attention. They'd put you on a "maybe next time, nice guy/gal" list. And I understand this, to a point; experience on some kind of civic level is always helpful. But again, you just get this repeating cycle of only the same few volunteering, or - only the same narrow demographic, and it just goes on and on.

And while I like the town meeting election in theory, in practice, again - you primarily get older citizens who have the time or are interested in coming out to spend a day at the Civic Center to listen to speeches, eat some doughnuts, and then cast a vote.

But - I bailed on the party when my writing career started taking off, and my kids got into the teenaged years, and...and....the truth is, I'm a poster child for the opinionated younger (well, relatively, anyway) citizen of this town who doesn't put her money where her mouth is. I talk a lot, but I don't do anything about it. (Except vote, of course.) So it's hard for me to malign the CBP when, after all, it's made up of people who do care a lot. Maybe they're not the most forward-thinking group in town anymore, which is a concern. But they do care, at least the people with whom I worked did.

Still, I think change is always good, and it's obvious that business as usual is not helping this village move forward in the way we all know it could.

Very well said. I share all of those sentiments, and like you, have taken away a majority of positives from that experience.

Oh, please. I am tired of the old/young demographic argument. This town is in need of shaking. Snap out of it. If the CBP wants to slate candidates, then go ahead. But it's not a coronation. I remember some on this board accusing Ladesic of buying his election. So what. He had the nerve to run. I also remember when others ran as an independent. You would have thought Hester Prynne was running. Such scandal. Such hubris. Wear the Scarlet "I" you independent!

Ideas will win out, and from what I have seen from this administration, the only idea I see is "business as usual". Did anyone not pay attention to what your CBP slated Village President just did in picking a strategic planner? There is no need for another party. Only other candidates. I now relinquish my soapbox to Clam.
