Well candidate, that is not very good news with another round of 5-9 inches of snow coming tonight. Cul-de-sac is not very big.

My street is supposed to be in the red zone...a priority street given its condition, grade and lack of egress. They did not plow it until Friday afternoon. Frown Not that I cared...I was at work.

Public Works has secured enough to keep us going so we should be good for a while although we may need to use it sparingly. If you haven't called public works with your concern feel free to shoot me an e-mail with your street name and I will ask about it for you. It can't hurt to ask. Then again maybe it could.

Do you think that if we stored some in the middle of your cul de sac that you wouldn't need to shovel the rest of the winter.[joke]

I would love the salt pile in my culdy, at least I wouldn't have the 2 inches of ice piled up from the crappy job done by the plow.......{joke}.

Seriously, it does seem to be a concern that there is a lack of salt on the roads, but at the same time, I am aware that this has been a horrible winter for snowfall and their use of the salt needs to be watched as we have at least another month of snowfall ahead of us.

Ok, I will stop complaining about the plowing now. Candidate is the voice of reason and thanks......have a good rest of the winter folks......Oh, and don't mind my snow blower at 630 am tomorrow...

Just wondering - how are things in Glen Ellyn snow-wise now (Wednesday, around 1:45 pm). I'm sitting in the Sears Tower watching the snow, and trying to decide if it would be wise to go home early if possible. Love sliding out of the Park/Montclair parking lot lately.

I would definitely beat the rush and come home early. It is heavy, slushy snow and continues to fall at a good pace. I'm guessing at least five inches have fallen.

The roads were pretty bad at school dismissal times. I had to help a woman over the crest of the hill on the east side of Oak crossing Main. She was stuck and couldn't quite get over....her wheels were spinning. Some strong pushing from this beefy but strong woman got her over the edge she needed. Must have been 20 or more cars backed up behind us. There is a solid sheet of packed snow/ice on Western. Only the right-hand edge of the street is clear. Many intersections are horrible. It's a real mess. Luckily, I have 4-wheel drive!

Candidate, seems they really should salt the hill on Hawthorne coming up from West and Oak east of Main. Lots of cars slipping and inching up those this afternoon....

After griping on this thread the other day, I must give credit today. We had to wait a little longer - cul-de-sac - but after the village truck left our drive had only a few scattered snow boulders to have it all clear. Much better! Smile

GEmom2 you should feel lucky. Your cul-de-sac must have been the only street that they visited last night. According to Candidate they are using the salt sparingly. They sure are! Every intersection and street around both West and Hadley were covered with 2”of ice at 7am. At 7 am they were picking up the plowed mound of snow in the middle of the street on Penn between Park and Forest. Isn’t that a job that is to be done after 10-11 pm according to the village “Snow Storm Management Operation Brochure”? I do not remember see any snow falling at 10:30 when I went to bed. If this were Chicago the mayor would be announcing the “unexpected retirement of the Public Works Director” about now. They may have a plan on how to handle snow but so far this year they are having an extremely difficult time executing it. According to the village they do not have a big enough shed to store an abundant amount of salt. Instead of patting each other on the back at the end of the year and telling us how big of a tax abatement we get, why don’t they look into using some of that money to make some additional improvements in town. I would not have too much concern about missing the couple of bucks in tax rebate that I get if it meant being able to get around town in a safer manner than it has been this winter. The state and county sure didn’t have any problems getting Roosevelt Road, Rt. 53 or Park south of Roosevelt in shape for the morning commute.

I used the word "clear" in the relative sense. The other day there was about a 6 feet wide and two feet high pile of compacted snow across our driveway base after they came. Today it was much better. You can't see the street pavement by a longshot, but the deep snow is gone. It looks like the next problem will be clogged sewer drains with subsequent flooding and freezing of the streets. Eek

Yeah, just before 7 I was surprised to see they had Park blocked between Crescent and Penn, and were using a front loader to scoop snow into dump trucks. Struck me as odd, but pretty much par for the course in the village that works. I shovelled at 6:30 yesterday eve and - at most - maybe an inch fell after that.

I usually drop my freshman off on Pennsylvania near Park, but couldn't do it this morning because of the snow removal. This happens every time it snows more than an inch, causing me and many others to have to drive closer to the school, making huge back-ups. Yes, next time it snows, I'll leave ten minutes earlier and make the kid walk the last six blocks.

Also, can't stand the huge mounds of snow in the middle of one way streets causing people to choose their lane at the corner and backing up everyone behind them. There is a criss-cross as both east and westbound Crescent try to maneuver onto Forest that would make the Blue Angels nervous.

Shouldn't the snow removal on streets leading to the high school be done before 6:30 a.m? I'm no streets and sanitation director, but common sense dictates that you get the pick-up done before the heaviest traffic is expected in the area. Just a thought.

Edited to correct a spelling error.

NEVER, EVER underestimate the power of Kitty Litter! That was a godsend last night at 11:45 PM. Unstuck a several ton truck and cargo in seconds flat! WOW! I was amazed (now my poor kitty better make use of her sand in her box until I get home with fresh stuff). I'm getting more. Much more. Terrific in a quick fix, probably better that salt. I had it in my trunk for the longest time but took it out the other day. Actually could have used it in my work parking lot for my coworkers, who, eventually left their cars overnight.

Oh and here's a fun fact: CSO (community service officers) leave at 11:00 pm. Didn't know that! do- now!

What I have noticed over the years, is that downtown Glen Ellyn is not plowed promptly, nor well. I can't understand why they can't keep Main Street downtown cleared??

Did you see the Village Memo sent to everyone in the CBD on snow removal?

Basically says tenants are responsible for shoveling the walk ( o.k. I don't have a problem with shoveling) However it is illegal for the shoveler to push it toward or into the street.
