Wednesday night at 8:15 as I was putting EXXXX to bed, the doorbell rang. The dogs were upstairs with EXXXX so I went down to answer the door. TXX was at a XXXX XXX XXXXX meeting & I had forgotten to turn on the outside lights. I flipped on the lights and two men where standing on our front porch. They were white men, overweight, and both had on jeans and light blue “golf” shirts. They also had lanyards around their necks with plastic tags with their pictures on them but no words. I opened the main door and quickly locked the screen door. The first man addressed by name (Mrs. CXXXXXX) and said they were from AT&T and needed to come in to check our modem. I must have looked puzzled because he said, “You know, you ordered a new modem two weeks ago and we wanted to make sure you got it and it was working properly” At this point, it was a little dark out so I looked past them to find their car and in our driveway was parked a black plain pick-up truck with NO lettering on it. I snapped my fingers to call the dogs down at that point. EXXXX came running down with them. The dogs started going bezerk and the second guy says, “well, we really don’t need to come in to check it so thank you for your time. You have a really nice house.” The first guy said, “Mrs. CXXXXXX, we just needed to make sure your dial-up service is working.” I said, “We don’t have dial-up, we have DSL.” The second guys says, “Right, well we need to get back to the office to make sure we update your file.” I shut the main door and locked it and they left. The next morning I asked him about a modem. He didn’t order one so after EXXXX went to school Thursday, I headed over to the police station to make a report. The police officer was really nice and called AT&T to see if a crew was actually in our court last night. We found out that in fact, NO, there was no crew out. AT&T told him that their workers NEVER ask to come inside unless you have called them out for service; that they only come during daylight hours; that they drive ONLY AT&T marked cars; and that they ONLY park in the street and never in driveways unless street parking is unavailable. The policeman said that break-ins in Glen Ellyn tend to really only happen when NO ONE is home and usually during the day but that it sounds like these guys were probably casing our neighborhood to check-out people’s schedules, see who had dogs, etc. He feels we are fine and safe, but he said to be extra diligent at locking doors, windows, etc. and to call 911 immediately if we see them again or anything else suspicious. He will keep us posted if anyone else reports a similar instance. His name is Officer Downey if anyone wants to contact him. The police line is 469-1167.
Can you give us any idea where you may live (neighborhood)? I've been seeing a lot of HUGE SUV's like the Navigators and Escalades driving up and down my street. Music blastin or just joy riding? Anyway I just looked out of place. I do not know if these fella's live here or are passing through or looking at our homes, but it is very noticeable.
