Or he meant this. "If you were the Governor of any other state, you would be a disgrace to that state." |

Hi,
I am not making the same connection here as the example given by 4MP. Notice when I posted regarding what I saw last night, it had almost nothing to do with what the people were wearing. Unless you count the guy who was changing his shirt on someone's lawn. The distinction between the two examples given by 4MP was clear. One couple appeared to be using a public drinking fountain to take a sponge bath! The other was getting ready to work out and were using the public facility appropriately. It doesn't matter if it is a park bench, sidewalk, drinking fountain, SOMEONE ELSES LAWN, or whatever. My issue is behavior-based, and not about anyone's gender, whether they are old or young, their size, or how they look in their underwear! I think if we address the actual events that have occurred we have a better shot at getting people to listen to our concerns. What I saw last night was happening almost TWO HOURS before PADS opened! I find it unfair that PADS management can force people to stay away from their facility until it is entry time. What is the reason for asking them to stay away until check-in time? Is it because they present a particular set of challenges and PADS must be ready to accomodate them? Why then would one expect the neighbors to have this obligation when they did not invite them to begin with? PADS Staff, if you are reading this.....please join the discussion and advise us how you will ensure that the neighbors who own homes near the PADS site do not have to deal with this for TWO HOURS every time there is a PADS event at that church. |

That invitation was made three weeks ago via letter. So far, there has been no response. "If you were the Governor of any other state, you would be a disgrace to that state." |

Cool.
Yep.
Nope. Coveted puts it perfectly: "There has got to be a better way to go about this. Is it so wrong to expect that when you move out of the city to provide a safe, clean environment for your kids you would not have people changing their shirt on your front lawn? (Yep, saw that too.) I don't have the answer, but I have to believe we can help those who are less fortunate without creating an such a burden on this neighborhood and our already struggling CBD." I believe that, too. My only point is that stricter ordinances regarding public intoxication, cosumption of alcohol and indecent exposure, even loitering, need to be well-thought out so as not to have unintended consequences and be enforcable for all. The littering(cigarette butts) and trespassing (being on a private lawn) would seem easier to uphold consistently. P.S. Thanks Amy |

Well the answer certainly isn't giving them carte blanche to our library, parks and sidewalk benches. The conversation circles back to the issue that these people are IMPORTED into our community and treat our facilities as their own private homeless playground. The welcome mat need to be pullled from their collective feet. |

4MP for village president. He has my vote.

A certain level of discretion needs to be vested in our police department. Taken to its extremes, there are enforcement issues in almost every law on the books. All many of us ask is that the discretion be titled in favor of the law abiding residents.
The owner of Fuscia gets ticketed for having law abiding (usually) residents have a couple of pops....and bums all over Glen Ellyn are permitted to drink at will in public. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. David St. Hubbins has my vote. "If you were the Governor of any other state, you would be a disgrace to that state." |

CLE... I've noted in other posts that we (neighbors) have asked PADS/1Cong the same question. Specifically, why can't someone be there at least 2 hrs in advance or, at least, can they just use the parking lot on the northside of the church as a "hang-out" place the PADS crew. What we were told was that PADS/church can't allow this, because there aren't enough PADS volunteers to monitor the church property prior to the 7 PM start time and they aren't allowed in the parking lot because there's not enough volunteers to watch them when they are out there. Which raises the question... what is PADS scared of that they can't allow their patrons to stand in an empty parking lot unsupervised prior to them unlocking the doors of the church?? |

Ok, GEMom (not #2) and/or Amy, answer this simple question:
Other than feel good, how does hosting three PADS sites, within one block of our CBD benefit Glen Ellyn? "You shouldn't soil your Sunday pants, like those other foolish ants." |

First, I didn't post regarding CLE's post because I generally agree with it.
Second, I posted in response to David St.H's post because he lost the point of 4MP's post. Now, on to my dear BB: I believe helping homeless people benefits society. GE is part of society. BUT, as I have said many, many times. The problem here isn't JUST the fact that there are a bunch of homeless folks around, it's how some of the homeless folks choose to behave that is causing the problem. I also recently stated that I don't think PADS is going to SOLVE this problem. I am all for getting the interested parties to sit down (thus, the letter that Fan refers to) but if we get no response, certainly there must be another path. I do not, however, feel that the GE Safety group has demonstrated the appropriate path to getting the job done either. I wish I had realized the "Coffee with the Cops" was this past Saturday or I would have gone to express some of my concerns....I suppose the next one will be in July when I am not availabe.... I also plan to discuss some of my concerns with my pastor as well as a friend who has coordinated PADS volunteers at our church in the past. I've been a tad busier lately with the end of the school year and trying to do a lot of "mom" things so I haven't had/taken the time but I plan to within the next week. I would encourage any of you who are concerned to take those concerns to the churches who host as well as the police. BUT, I highly recommend that people try to be VERY thoughtful about what you say and how you say it or you'll just look like a bunch of elitist jerks. Perhaps I could even suggest that you pray about it. (Sorry Clam.) "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real state, but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith. " -Bertrand Russell V. Delong |

I love Ayn Rand. I re-read Atlas Shrugged about once every 3-4 years. I first read the book while I was in high school and I still think it is my favorite book and one of the best fictional books ever written. Who is John Galt? |

This is an excellent idea. And it's www.glenellynsafety.org. If you read the web site you will see a request for help. If we all work together we can come up with additional suggestions such as these. How about a picket line with signs and we will personally invite the Chicago Tribune to do a story on one of the nights PADS hosts a sleepover? Maybe give them an exclusive? The Trib not PADS. |

My Father once made me do a book report on Atlas Shrugged before he would lend me money for tuition. I have the audio version of this and listen to it on most every road trip. I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve of me. Ayn Rand Anthem |

I'm surprised no one made mention of the Chicago police officer who was killed by a mentally ill homeless lady. So very sad for so many reasons.

A reply from PADS, our Village or both? Care to share?

The Village. Just an acknowledgement of the letter. They also wanted to know what dates would be good for an initial meeting.
