Former Village Manager Gary Webster passed away this afternoon after his three-year bought with cancer. Gary's wife Karen informed President Vicky Hase of the sad news.
Gary retired from Glen Ellyn after a 22-year undefeated record of service. He became aware of his illness on the day he flew out to Arizona to start his retirement. Our thoughts certainly go out in honor and in comfort to his family.
More details and an official village press release will be published next week. No further information is available at this time.
The strength of Glen Ellyn is often defined in terms of character. Gary Webster had an abundance of character. He will be missed.
here here. he was a class A-1 act, and i'm sad to hear of his passing. And my best to his family. he really was a VERY nice man, and a very good manager. God speed.
I had the pleasure of working with Gary many times in the 90's and beginning of the 00's. He was a straight shooter and all around good guy. Always looked out for the Village's interest as much as possible without bowing to inappropriate or out-of-line political pressure. That's how you survive 22 years in an oft demanding and thankless job. Plus he really seemed to enjoy his job.
For all of Gary's "flaws" I think the old maxim is proven true once again: You do not appreciate what you have until it's gone.
For those who got to know Gary, he was kind, thoughtful, intelligent, funny guy. Above all else, he was a true professional. Something this town has been sorely lacking since his retirement.
He is missed. My thoughts and prayers to his wife and family.
