So they enter into a deal that gets people pushed out of their homes and NOW they can't ante up! Perhaps we can make them work it off by re-stringing the Christmas lights in the CBD. For the next 30 years.
Looks like 5 Corners will have a matching eyesore across from the old Marathon station.

I discussed this with a few people earlier in the week after being alerted that it was on the agenda for this morning's meeting. Someone spotted an innocent line regarding a presentation to the FC from the GEHS and said, "What's all this then?"
From day one I questioned why this village of 27,000 needed anything more than what we already have...namely Stacey's Tavern...in order to teach and remind us of our historical past. But, given that the passionate folks at the GEHS were footing the bill, I figured...hey, it's your money. Do as you please.
Now this. I knew these guys were biting off more than they could chew. And this stunning turn of events proves it. Who ever would have thunk that the donation taps to the GEHS might just be turned off at some point in history? No better way to put it other than it appears that they ****ed up. And now Glen Ellyn, the village that does not want to be in the real estate business...is most likely going to be in the real estate business.
If it were my decision...I'd pay off those buildings, sell them to the highest bidder...and take my substantial loss as they do not seem to have been bought cheaply or wisely. Good thing there are lots of people and businesses knocking down our doors trying to get in and open stores, shops and restaurants.

That old building on the SW corner was a favorite of mine. Not so much of an architectural beauty, but to me, it said "Old GE". I couldn't believe a group calling itself a "Historical" society led the bulldozers in bringing it down. Stacy's Tavern never meant a thing to me.

Don't let Gus in on this, Lionheart...but I completely agree with you re: that building. One has to wonder how much it would have cost to save/renovate it. One also has to wonder...again...how the Preservation folks let another one slip through their hands without a word. That could have and should have been a nice example of old GE architecture. Now it looks no different than C. George's $900K rowhouses.
If people have been screaming for Glen Ellyn to have a gateway on its north end, maybe the GEHS thought that they were giving it to them. But with the village seemingly getting closer to dire financial straits, and now that we are facing a $1.4MM outtrade courtesy of folks who wanted to give us an overblown historical playground, what's next? I think this is a bigger deal than a lot of people understand, especially given the current financial situation locally and globally. What do you think the current market is for those two P.O.S. building that they bought? Owners had to be giggling all the way to the closing. If they can't pay this loan back, you and I just bought some overpriced buildings. Completely unawsome.

But if you or I bought it and wanted to renovate it or tear it down, the GEHS would have been all over us like Tiger Woods on a cocktail waitress at closing time.
