...clean the f-ing streets and sidewalks. Almost gagged looking at the gutters on exclusive Crescent Blvd. today. I know this town has a street sweeper or two. Let's fire 'em up.

And you retailers on Crescent...shame on you. How can you conduct business like that? You may not own the sidewalks, but you own the businesses. Get out there and clean that crap up. You are presenting yourselves in a nauseating fashion.

You are a passionate man.
You are also right on. Most old timers (and I am not making any CBP reference here) will tell you of the days when Dean Olson (coincidently the last Independent to be elected to the Village Board) could be seen on any early morning walking in town picking up garbage and scraping gum off of the sidewalk. And it was not just in front of his store.
We all need to take ownership of our downtown particularly the retailers and yes the Village.
This item was identified as a current goal from the Director of Public Works in their recent budget presentation so we should start to see some improvements soon.

This would also be a good civil service program for a scout troop or other volunteer organization, kind of like the "own a section of highway" program that you see signs for in places.

Or a lacrosse team.

Do they use something that could be used as a gum scraper in LaCrosse?

Have the village buy me a Stihl B85 and I'll go out there every Sunday and blow the stuff into a pile and put it in the garbage. Where it should be.

Wow... same wavelength. Scary... I walked down Crescent with my kid and was shocked at the mounds of cigarette butts in front of Starbucks.

For as much money that flows through this town, and as nice of houses as we have, this downtown is a real dump. The worst part, and the part that is completely controllable, is the negligence on the part of the village in doing something as simple as spending two to four hours a week trying to keep the place clean. Reminiscent of the piles of leaves that sat in front of Java Jucie for four months. Pretty pathetic.

I have often wondered what would happen if we cancel/replaced some of Ricky's responsibilities and had him do a clean up 3-4 times per week. I think the return would be better than the revenue he writes up for parking tickets.

As Candidate said, the Public Works Dept. has proposed to purchase a new, proper, machine to clean the sidewalks. If I remember correctly, the machine they have now is nothing more than one would buy at the local Home Depot (or Soukups). It is not powerful enough to get all the stuff off the sidewalks. The person presenting the proposal was just as frustrated as everyone else with the condition of the sidewalks and wanted to get the right machine to do the job. So redirecting Ricky would not solve this issue. (sorry Clam)

On another note, once the snow is gone, the garbage cans/tops will be power washed on a rotating basis. I think it is 6 at a time as they have 6 new garbage cans and will power wash the ones they remove, then put those out and power wash the 6 that they pick up and so on.

As for our good friend Ricky, he is trying to enforce the parking rules so that parking is available for shoppers. Yes, I know he is strict, but many places are. I watched Lake Geneva last summer and they have 2 full time ticket enforcers who continually walk around ticketing cars in empty meter spaces- all day. Next time you are in other towns, look around and see if you spot any parking enforcers. It would be a fun thread to start to see what we find. By the way, Officer Rick received a letter of thanks from a resident who lost his keys on the street. Officer Rick found them and returned them to the owner.

I know this town has a lot of downtown issues that need to be dealt with, but we do have some huge number of police that one or two could possibly be assigned to our downtown to do those tasks. Just a thought. I have no idea what everyone's role is. Is Officer Rick the only one assigned to the downtown area?

Picking on Ricky is an age-old pastime in Glen Ellyn. I have never been a victim of one of his perceived injustices, but I know many that have. That said...the position is regrettably required. A good friend does a lot of work with him with regard to the comings and goings of our children at GW and speaks highly of him. Again, most likely a nice man. Of course my request to have his job duties switched from using a pencil to using a broom were satirical in nature.

Just buy me a BG 85 and I'll do it every Sunday morning around 6:30 A.M.

No way! Leave Officer Perez alone. Me and Yoss are depending on him to enforce the "no smoking" signs posted on all the benches. Good bye Mr. McSmokes, hello fresh air.

Yoss, the term "bum" is so insensitive. Don't you know all the bums have been driven out by the homeless? They simply no longer exist. Resindentially challenged is the more, politically correct term. Get with it son!
