An out-of-town friend visited Glen Ellyn this past weekend. Her observations prompted the following questions. Does anyone know more about the village's Sign Code?
For example:
Why was Firkin's getting heat for their temporary sign when AJ Diamond Gallery has been shuttered for months and still has a temporary "Retirement Sale" sign displayed proudly on its side?
Why were Craig's Pharmacy's building owners allowed to have two exposed wires over its front door for 18 years?
Why, when a place goes out of business, like Baskin and Robbins, and the sign is removed, are the owners not obligated to fill in the holes left and paint the facade? (Lots of examples of this all over town.)
Why when 7-11 took over our White Hens, were the signs allowed to get bigger and gaudier?
Why is Aravati's allowed to display a white square on the former KFC's cuppola, only to be lit up a night to reveal a BACKWARDS Aravati's logo?
My friend's observations are humorous, but concerning. Does anyone know the code?

Sounds a lot like the Chamber of Commerce website...
I wonder about a great many things that are amok with the Village, including the hit or miss sign situations. There was (or still is?) long dangling wires from the phone pole nearest Park at the Prairie Path in front of the former creepy convenience store / bank. Years and years of that dangerous wire leading all the way to the ground. How that's been allowed is beyond me.
Speaking of signs, Lupe, I know the guy who created your penguin avatar. Took him many hours messing with stock footage. The real sequence didn't really depict a push into the drink. I've seen a 640 x 480 version of it and it's awesome stuff.
There is a really cool series of neon signs in the window of a business on North Avenue near swift road. Seems like it might be a chiropractic-type place. A good place to get a massage or an adjustment.
Clam, Koslow's can do an adjustment on your bike. They have neon signs. But that is Lombard, not technically located in the Jewel of the Western Suburbs.
lupe, I'm sure Dave J. (he's not from around here) would be delighted if you kept the penguin anim as your avatar. It is now considered public domain AFAIK.
To keep this on-topic, links about signs and more signs here.
does GE Homes still have that sign/billboard at Plumtree & Crescent? it was an ugly plywood eyesore for years, then they put something halfway decent-looking up. still, it seems odd to have a billboard soliciting a business sitting year after year on a residential lot (although the building dept. tells me its w/in code and legal). not very neighborly, if you as me.
to put it another way, according to the village, i'd be w/in my right to do the same on my front yard -- providing i stay w/in code. difference is, i wouldn't do it to my neighbors.
