If I could figure out how to post a picture here, I would show you the view that I woke to this morning as most of the trees on the 2 empty lots on Western just north of Pennsylvania were cut down to make way for the Clinic parking lot. It was very sad to see the trees now horizontal, like a massacre.

I have to admit, it brought me to tears to see these big trees cut down only to be replaced by pavement. I can't help thinking that my property value is 10-20% less today than it was yesterday.

Thanks for the warning Gemsa. I better make sure I have a box of tissue in the van for my next trip down Western.
I hope that the new clinic will have to replace some of the lost trees.
I don't think people have any clue as to what the impact trees have on us until they are gone.

How ironic...when we were looking into putting up a new garage, we were told that the village frowns on cutting down any trees when making improvements. Talking out of the other side of their mouths now huh?

It's typical. Big business can make all the variations they want while the residents get screwed.

HD - I am sure your garage is not the economic engine that the clinic is. I hope Vicky Hase is proud of what she has done to that part of GE.

As far as property values go, the GE planning commision clearly stated that no zoning changes can be made that would decrease property values of the surrounding properties. So I am sure you will be fine. The new park benches at the parking lot will only increase your property values.

It was like receiving a punch in the stomach when I turned off of Pennsylvania. I will try to get some pictures of this to show the Village Board the project in which they can take pride. Afterall, isn't the clinic the engine driving Glen Ellyn. Is this our vision for the future. Once again, I feel that a local board has made a gesture to the community -- a hand gesture that is, with a certain finger extended.

It's butt ugly...no better words for it. Of course, it will only get uglier as they start construction and make an even larger mess!

I think its an absolute joke. Lets put parking at a clinic and tear down trees, but give people who park downtown SHOPPING! or trying to at least, a ticket if they are one minute past two hours, or even better yet, to REALLY screw people so they dont come in town, lets make no parking available to anyone. Its funny how people work, and they try acctually justify it. Sorry I could not pass up this post. But that is okay, because have you seen most of those people, KARMA REAALLLLLYYYY DID A NUMBER ON THEM! They must of done some really awful sh!t in a past life.

It really is quite amazing that half of the people in GE don't storm the Civic Center with torches and pitchforks.

For the record, in light the allegations against me, I want to state now that if this were to occur, I will have no part in the torches.

Drove by the Mews today and noticed that the brick on the buildings at the rear look quite different than the bricks on the facade that face the street...what is up with that? almost like they are from a very old building...

It's the spending, Stupid!

Here are the pics from the first day they worked on it. Today it is a lot worse.

One really must drive by the site to get the full effect of how barren it is and how ugly the parking lot is. Can't wait until that new, trendy building (which will be out of date completely within a few years) gets erected. Wonder how the owner of that adorable little white house is feeling about now....?

Have no fear, read the article in today's Herald about Picture Perfect Glen Ellyn.

It was reassuring to scan the "Glen Ellyn Appearance Review Guidelines" and see the following from the Supreme Court (11/22/54): "...It is within the power of the legislature to determine that the community should be beautiful as well as healthy, spacious as well as clean..."

I wonder how the community memebers living across from that mess on Western feel about how well our officials did to uphold the beauty of Glen Ellyn.

If anyone is interested in reviewing the guidelines they can be found on the village web-site.

Not worth the paper they were originally printed on.

Yeah, but if we pulp all those trees that were cut down, think of how much more paper we'll have!

it is about time someone trimmed those trees. They were overgrown, shabby looking, and in need of a serious pruning.

Yeah, I bet all of the residents over there on Western are thrilled not to have to look at the overgrowth. Now, they have a view of a beautiful asphalt parking lot, a fence, and several over-grown multi-family buildings.

well, didn't those residents turn down 3 other projects there that would have kept those trees there? If they wanted to stop urban sprawl, then they should have purchased the lots. You, like everyone else in this town and the western suburbs are guilty of what the clinic is doing. 100 years ago, a farm house had a wonderful view of the prairie, and then someone built a house that blocked that view. Land is very valuable in the western suburbs, if there is an open lot, then someone is going to build on it. 3 different projects that were going to put homes in one way or another were turned down there because the residents shot it down. Now a clinic that hires 24% of work force in GE wants to expand their parking lot and we are all irate. Fine, let the clinic move out, taking 24% of the jobs in GE. Then you will see a downtown that would be totally empty. I don't want my town looking like Aurora. I want my house to be worth something, not a 100 year home I couldn't sell for $100k like most in downtown Aurora.

The last "home" building project that I aware of that was proposed on that site was a multi-family building that was as large as the Glen Ellyn Library. So, yeah, some of the trees could have stayed, but who would ever know with that large of a structure looming on a residential street?
