If you get a chance to go to Starbucks today, check out the garbage cans and surrounding areas in front of Dr. Marold's old space. I took photos with my phone, but can't figure out how to post them. What was the photo posting site that Dan the Man posted before?

This being Sunday, there is no one to call at the village, but this situation happens all the time. Especially in front of that building. I have never seen anything quite like it. I guarantee dumping private garbage in a public receptacle is illegal. How can those apartments above the shop not have garbage service?

Also, time to fire up the street sweepers and the dudes that clean the garbage and leaves off the sidewalks (wouldn't expect the retailers to do that, would we? Wink ). Crescent looks positively nauseating. The Town Builder folks should come by and take a look. Might give them some free ideas.

Honorable mention goes to Starbucks for their beautiful hot pink plastic buckets with long-dead plants in the front of their store. Nice choice.

This is a usual sight, but I also noticed yesterday how awful the old Chase bank at the corner of Main and Roosevelt looks. The cans were overflowing with trash and it really looked to me as if there probably have been homeless people camping out in the vestibule, with all the attendant debris.

Yesterday, I watched a guy bring a whole garbage bag of "stuff" from I-don't-know-where and force it into the garbage can located by the floral clock. Needless to say, the trash can had no room for any additional trash. I don't know if he was cleaning out his car or lives in an apartment nearby but he appeared to be coming from the parking lot...I bit my toungue but obviously village trash cans need to be emptied more often. It's crazy that a supposedly nice town should have this much crap sitting around trash cans and overflowing out of trash cans!

Nonetheless, if you want to see pictures of what the area in front of the optometrist's old office looked like this morning...since it appears to be a sensitive issue with a lot of us, feel free to e-mail me and I will send you the photos. I'm sure many of you have seen it for yourselves.

I spoke to an acquaintance who was in from Sewickley, PA and asked him if he had ever seen anything like that in his town. His answer was no. I believe that this is illegal to do. If I had the strength and desire, I'd go into town, open the bags and look for clues as to its origin. Too tired.

I have a few photos as well but please send me yours for my collection. This has to stop.
By the way I have a few relatives from Sewickley. Their website www.sewickleyborough.org says they have a "vibrant business district" addressing the garbage might be a good start for us.

Any truth to the rumor that Town Builders' proposed slogan is:
Not every town can be a Sewickley!

Doesn't necessarily need to be Sewickley, PA. To have that going on outside the busiest door in Glen Ellyn is absurd and preventable. And if not preventable, it is certainly easy to track down and ticket the offenders. Open those bags up and find a piece of mail...very simple. The offender does it all the time. When there is only one bag, I usually open the can up and throw it in. They use a very unique black bag with a red draw string.

On two different occasions I have witnessed people exit one of those stairways near Starbucks that lead to apartments and deposit their trash in the cans on the sidewalk. On another morning walk, I saw rats running around one of those cans. Nothing like a couple rats to greet visitors in our downtown.

With all the junk mail I send you, including that hilarious xmas card from our president, I would think you would send me these photos without me having to ask. OK, please send me the photos. Thank you.

I forgot to send them to work. They are sitting on my computer at home. Frown

BTW, your wife looked exceptionally beautiful on your family Christmas card. Give her my best.

I'll give you a description. There were 4-5 industrial-sized black garbage bags thrown on the sidewalk, a couple of king-sized pillows as well as 1 or 2 standard ones, what appeared to be a kid's Halloween costume, and a bit of construction debris. All strewn about the sidewalk. The receptacles were overflowing, to boot. All-in-all, didn't look very good. But I must admit that I did not see any vermin.

I just walked by this sorry mess on Crescent. Wow! What kind of town would allow this to be viewed for several days by its residents or shoppers coming in for a visit?

Confused

Oh yes, Vicky's town. This kind of stuff has to end — and soon. If I was in business near this continuing eyesore I would move to another town as fast as possible. Do we have a real village manager yet?

There was still a pile of filled black garbage bags by the trash can outside Starbucks at 4:15 pm today. Those pink pots are a nice touch. Maybe someone can move those over by the other trash!!

did either of you call the village today to report this problem? or is this an experiment to see how long it will take to get it done?

let me ask it this way: do you actually want it cleaned up and the offenders caught and stopped so our town doesn't continue to look like this, or do you want to just make fun of the administration?

if you've called, please excuse the questions. if not, i'm truly curious as to why you didn't (not trying to be sarcastic or mean here). is it because you feel nothing would be done if you did call?

also, i bet you could get starbucks to toss the pots by talking to the manager. sure, it'd be great if they "got it" themselves, but evidently they don't. so, as citizens of GE, we need to take some things into our own hands to actually get them done. btw, it takes all of 30 seconds to shoot a picture of the front of starbucks and email it to corporate HQ. believe me, that would permanently fix the problem.

I called at 2:45 after GE58 said it was still there. Spoke to a nice woman who seemed more than a little pissed-off that this had happened again. She said she would be walking over to have a look.

Do you truly think we are that shallow and petty, t.a.? I called earlier in the day and got a VM. I rarely leave VMs. Hate them. Sorry, dislike them.

For the record, the people at Village Hall, when you get ahold of the proper person, are typically very helpful.

I was at the Civic Center this afternoon, but was there before I saw the garbage - for the first time - this afternoon. I would have told someone there about the problem, had I seen it for myself beforehand. Smile I returned home too late to call.

It is hard to believe that no one who patronizes area businesses would have mentioned this to business owners or employees.
