I have a hard time ratting out the manager of Starbucks simply because he or she has bad taste. I'm not certain these hot pink beauties violate any rules other than those of design common sense. But they are quite a sight.
The garbage was still there a few minutes ago. I don't blame the woman at village hall. I mean, other than sending a village truck over to clean it up, or having the police open the bags for clues regarding the garbage's provenance and ticketing the offender (I'll bet there is a piece of junk mail in there along with the dirty diapers), in theory the sh*t will be picked up tomorrow with the rest of the garbage. Suffice it to say, it saddens me that this town and its citizens ignore and/or put up with sh*t like that. The Jewel of the Western Suburbs continues to show its flaws. I don't want to continue to pile on to a woman who has had here share of governmental mishaps, but I don't recall this sort of stuff happening under Matthews or Wark (it pains me to compliment Joe Wark. It really does.). I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but a town that can't even clean its streets when something out of the ordinary occurs is a town that doesn't work properly for its citizens. |

Thanks for making the call, Clam. I really dropped the ball on this today since I was off to work immediately (almost)

the sewickley web site offers a photo gallery with three entries: the 2007 memorial day parade, autumn in sewickley and the flag burning ceremony. odd choice, that last entry. |

I guess I might deserve the award for the least civic duty, but it sort of burns me that there would be any need for a private citizen to notify the village of an obvious condition on what is one of the villages most travelled blocks.
Yes, on the one hand it is no big deal to look up the village number and make a call. But how many people does the village employ, whose daily commutes and tasks take them past that obvious situation? Seems to me that dumping on a village street - or littering - should constitute some kind of ordinance violation warranting police notice. Heck, if nothing else it is a tripping or health hazard that the village should be aware of and desire to abate. I have long been disgusted with our village's eagerness to turn a blind eye to obvious code and ordinance violations until an adversely affected citizen makes a point out of stirring them to action. |

He can put a chalk mark on the garbage and give it a ticket 3 hours later if it's not gone! |

My thoughts exactly. Assuming Ricky Perez was out there with his stick yesterday, how could he look at that and think it is "normal?"

This area has always had major garbage problems. You would think it would be as simple as the cops noticing the mess, calling Village Hall on their walkie talkie and having someone come over to investigate/clean up. They know the garbage pick up schedules, and if this mess has been there since Sunday, you would think they would make more of an effort to communicate to each other that there is a problem. Perhaps they need their vision checked.

At least we don't live in Naples, Italy! The army had to come get the trash there.

As far as enforcing any existing ordinance, sounds like a perfect topic to be discussed at "Coffee with the Cops". I saw the trash there too and it's F'n terrible. If I were Village Prez, I'd be walking a beat at least once a day making certain my village was spotless. It would take all of 5-10 minutes.
Based on the ordinace below, it appears it's ok to use public receptacles, but not to the point where its becomes a nuisance or the trash becomes scattered. Also, my guess is that this pertains to incidental trash, not residential trash. 7-13-6: PLACEMENT OF LITTER IN RECEPTACLES SO AS TO PREVENT SCATTERING: Persons placing litter in public trash receptacles or in authorized private receptacles shall do so in such a manner as to prevent such litter from being carried or deposited by the elements upon any street, sidewalk or other public place or upon any private premises. (Ord. 3272, 1-26-1987) I found this too. Do we have one of these? 8-1-2: STREET DIVISION: (A) Creation: There is hereby created the street division within the public works department of the village, which shall consist of a superintendent and such employees as may be assigned thereto. (B) The Superintendent: The superintendent of streets shall be appointed by the village administrator. (C) Functions Of The Division: It shall be the function of the street division, and the duty of each employee assigned thereto, to see that the streets, alleys, sidewalks and other public ways in the village are kept in good repair and are cleaned at regular intervals, or so often as may be necessary. (D) The Responsibility Of The Superintendent: The superintendent of streets shall be responsible for the supervision of the street division and charged with the efficient management thereof. All employees assigned to the street division shall observe the orders and instructions of the superintendent. (Ord. 2336, 3-27-1978) Post those pictures Clam! Try this....can't get the photo to post.
I think you'll find the image to be quite graphic. NSFW, not recommended for children, not safe for those who have recently finished a meal. The filthy, stained and soaked pillows are enough to make you gag. And don't miss the garbage can in the background. Equally stuffed, with pieces of cheesy paneling leaning against it. Humorously, there is a comfy bench nestled between the overflowing receptacles. One of the least inviting benches in the suburbs. There is a glimpse of Parker's car in the background for those interested in stalking her. Before GE58 and Blue Echoes complains, photo was taken with a Motorola Razr or Razor or whatever. |

I think this is more on target. 7-2-1: NUISANCES: In all cases where no provision is hereby made defining what are nuisances and how the same may be removed, abated or prevented, in addition to what may be declared a nuisance herein, those offenses which are known to the common law and the statutes of Illinois as nuisances may, in case the same exist within the village limits, or within one mile thereof, be treated as nuisances and proceeded against as provided in this code, or in accordance with any other provision of law. (M.C. 1965, Sec. 11.01) … 7-2-3: DEFINITIONS: It shall be a nuisance: ... I) To cause or permit any premises within the village to become or remain littered with refuse, rubbish, junk, waste, manure, straw, weeds, brush, machinery or parts thereof, or other like matter or things which may, or do, become offensive or dangerous to the health of others; ... 7-2-2: ABATEMENT: It shall be the duty of the building and zoning official to serve notice in writing upon the owner, occupant, agent or person in possession or control of any lot, building or premises, in or upon which any nuisance may be found, requiring him to abate the same in such manner and within the time prescribed by the building and zoning official; provided, however, that if the owner, occupant, agent or person in possession or control of any premises in or upon which any nuisance is found is unknown or cannot be found, the building and zoning official shall proceed to abate such nuisance without notice; and, in addition to any penalty or fine, the expense of such abatement shall be collected from the person who is determined to have created, continued or suffered such nuisance to exist. The Glen Ellyn police department and the street division of the department of public works are also authorized to enforce the provisions of this chapter. btw..don't try this either...they are on to you.
7-2-3: DEFINITIONS: It shall be a nuisance: (Z) To pay or attempt to pay any municipal fine or permit fee or make payment for any other goods or services with check, money order, currency or coin which has been soiled, contaminated, tainted or polluted with any human or animal bodily secretions, such as, but not limited to, blood, urine, semen, feces, mucus, spit or other human or animal waste or which has been soiled, contaminated, tainted or polluted with any foodstuff, adhesive, gluey, gooey, gummy or other material which causes the check, money order, currency or coin to be stuck together or which provides an offensive and/or annoying odor. The default on my iphoto must be that camera. To the best of my knowledge, it no longer works. In the market for a digital SLR. You ever buy one?
|

Me too. My film SLR is a Minolta X-370 with MC/MD lenses. I've read about some digitals that can accept these with adapters (e.g. Olympus E series). Would you recommend that or am I just being a cheap-***? "I always say nothing changes if nothing changes" - Jim Burket |

Mrs. Yoss has a Nikon D80, great camera. Were both looking into taking some photography classes in the near future. While Mrs. Yoss was a professional photographer for 15 years at UAL, she's a newbie with a digital camera. A lot of the United Vactions photo's used in the 80's and early 90's were taken by her. She literally has thousands of slides that she needs to scan and then I'm going to set-up a website for her. "Deck the halls..." |

Do you think she could have taken a better garbage photo than the one above? To be fair, it was quite overcast.

I'm sure of it. She is beyond meticulous when it comes to photography.
She drives me nuts taking vacation snapshots, if I had a dollar for everytime I said "Just take the picture!" Yoss is not a patient man. "Deck the halls..." |
