Calling All Civic Minded Volunteers! We need your help. 2011 Manor Woods (aka – the bog) Clean-Up Saturday, May 7, 8am – Noon. Rain date will be Sunday, May 8, 1pm-5pm. Together, as a community, we can get our woods back! Please join your fellow neighbors, students, friends and Scouts this year as volunteers spread wood chips and clean up trash. Big and small hands are needed. We need your help. Please come for an hour or stay all day. Or just come when you can! Meet at the nature circle (Brandon and Illinois). Bring shovels, pitchforks, wheelbarrows, rakes and gloves. Manor Woods is a valuable neighborhood and community resource. In 1996, as part of an Eagle Scout project, students, neighborhood residents, scouts, Village and Park District personnel worked together to create a woodchip pathway around the perimeter of Manor Woods. This, combined with the Nature Circle, which has been used by school class groups, makes Manor Woods an enjoyable, accessible parcel of nature right here in our neighborhood. The goal is to take advantage of this shared open space and make it both more attractive and more useful for the neighborhood and the village. Please e-mail me if you do have any questions. E-Mail the different Scout Troops - like Troops 41, 46, etc. My son's looking for a volunteering opportunity, and I know he's not the only one in his troop....

SOF - thanks for taking the lead on organizing the neighbors. Your efforts are appreciated. I'll see you on the 7th.

Thanks, but I am getting too much credit. As, you know, this has been a large effort to get it this far, and we have a way to go. So, tell your neighbors and tell your friends… all hands on deck for this Saturday. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best answers make sense without the questions being present.

We are thrilled that Manor Woods is reopening. The whole family would be out helping with the clean up if it weren't for another big GE event that morning - the Baseball parade. Kids need to line up at McChesney starting at 8:30 am. We will do our best to make it out there to show our support before or after the parade. Will there be any additional dates scheduled for clean up?

SOF, we will try and be there late morning. We have an early track meet out of town. P

Good job, everyone who helped! Those were some big wood chip piles to get through. I can confirm to all that the No Trespassing sings along Newton are history. I hope they're on their way to the metal scrapper right now. So bring the kids, bring the dogs, and enjoy the trails. Bayer aspirin and a big tube of Icy-Hot to SOF!

To paraphrase the United Way: “Thanks to us, it works for all of us.” The signs are down and Manor Woods is open again! Quite a few bags of trash were collected, and the paths are covered in wood chips and ready to explore. So come out and enjoy nature. Big thanks and shout outs to the many, many people that made this possible. Just to throw out a few names to be recognized: - Peggy Drescher, Barb Johnson, David Buckley, Chris Pekarek, and the many village and park district employees that shoveled and helped. - There were Scouts on hand from Pack 52 and Troop 41 (if I missed any, sorry). - And thanks to the GE Board for helping by both pushing for this project, and being on hand to help – special mention to Messrs Pfefferman, Ladesic and Henninger (again, if I missed and one, I’m sorry). Someone should stop in on Mr. Henninger – he shoveled a long time. Last but not least, thanks to all the neighbors and friends that showed up and dug right in – sorry, I couldn’t pass that up. We had a great day, but my doctor says that I need to go back to bed and soon as I get my buy order in for stock in Advil. The best answers make sense without the questions being present.

Don't forget the jug of water after all the running he did to make it to both the "sign pulling" and "tree dedication" ceremonies....he was ALL OVER that place! Great job, SOF! And a fantastic job to all who helped out! This was quite an inititative and that it was primarily led by neighbors illustrates what our town stands for.... Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele

Missed seeing you GESM2. Supposedly Middle was there as well, but I only saw his older son running around sliding down the woodchip hills. Thanks again to SOF for spearheading this effort. Now my kids get to hit the trails instead of just hearing stories about them. It's the spending, Stupid!

Are you SURE you missed seeing me, DTm?? Maybe you did and just didn't realize it?? I was happy to see so many kids there wanting to help out. Hopefully it'll bring new life and a new(er) generation into the woods. Having lived here for going on 7 years now, I'd heard of Manor Woods often, but never actually knew where it was. Here's the Glen Ellyn Patch story about it. Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele

hmm, I was there when that picture of Carl was taken, so evidently I wasn't paying attention. I did see two people with notepads taking pictures...you must have been one of them. It's the spending, Stupid!

I had about 6 more or so that were apparently unnecessary. I'm sure I've got at least one of you and just don't know it, lol. Yes, I ran up and caught the tail end of Carl's introduction. Was running a bit late as I had to tie some ice skates at Center Ice before heading over there. Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele

Probably looks like this

Yup, you got me in one of them. I'll keep an eye out for Lois Lane for next time. It's the spending, Stupid!
