My boy loves planes, so every once in a while, we go to O'Hare and watch them land. Today, we went out there and Air Force One was sitting parked on the east side of the airport. We drove to the spot we like to set the chair up and watch as they fly 80-100 feet over our head and there was a police officer arresting a photographer. I guess the security around O'Hare is kicked up a notch to stop a 50's something gray beard photographer from getting snaps of approaching 767s?

Thanks for the information, DTM. I was outdoors a lot yesterday and heard that persistent roar from above several times. I looked to the sky for the source without success.
I like your "Sound of Freedom" idea, perplexed.
I hadn't connected the noise to the Obamas' Chicago visit.
I believe this is the treatment that any president would get when they are out and about. Our president should get this protection and find nothing wrong with it, no matter if it was GWB, Obama, etc... A few sonic booms would be cool to!

Indeed, this level of security is typical for a President. Of course, Chicago is a little busier than Crawford, Texas...
We were flying yesterday and had to be under strict control - they told us what altitude we had to maintain and the route we had to take. That's not typical - just when the President is in town. It was only slightly longer in distance and time, nothing to get worked up about. Clearly some folks didn't check in and file their flight plans, per Yoss' posting. Wouldn't want the escort those planes received. That would be FREAKY!

When we use to live in NC, I would fly up to DC a good bit for business. Always fly American into National "still do". The NC flights were always gated at the end of the American terminal, which overlooks the river. Something most folks don't realize when they're sitting there, staring off into space at the undisclosed looking industrial building across the river in front of them...is that is where Marine 1 lives "his helicopter". A VERY cool site that always excites the kids "and parents" is to see all 3 of the helicopters coming up the river at low level, back to their super secured hanger. A real image of utter power.
New Air Force 1 pilots also use the airport in Wilmington, NC as a touch and go place to practice on shorter runways. They usually do this with the second version of the plane "there are two of them". AF1 is the only 747 in the world that can land on it's shorter runway. Very cool site to see a monster plane like that, with it's wheels down, creeping about 1,200 above the tree tops across town. When they would do this, they would pull marines down from Jacksonville "Camp Lejune" as added security around the airport. They'd have those guys and gals everywhere, and armed. Some surfer burnouts thought it'd be cool to hide in the woods across the runway one time and get a photo of smoking a joint with the plane in the distant background. That...didn't happen, and they got their butts kicked pretty badly by the marines who where hiding in the woods already.
BTW, this may not have been exclusively related to the prez coming home:
"On Friday, May 28th at approximately 9:30am, U.S. military F/A-18 fighter jets will be conducting rehearsal flights over the Central Business District.
The same aircraft will take part in Memorial Day observations including the wreath laying ceremony and the beginning of the Memorial Day parade at Daley Plaza on Saturday, May 29th. The aircraft participation in these events is expected to take place beginning at approximately 11:15am and continuing until approximately 1:00 PM.
