- Loiter too long? I resemble that remark. The thing I miss the most out here in my part of CA is trains. I've been back to GE only twice, and both times I spent hours at Einstein's watching the crossing. Hours at the library when it rained looking out the eastern windows. At night I would sit on the bench on Main looking for the train's lights to hit the tracks before making the turn in Lombard. Please don't arrest me on my next visit. |

I think the folks who have jumped to PADS defense have missed the original point of this thread-PADS needs volunteers.
So here you are on the GEBB, when you could be volunteering or working with your local church to enlist more support. Another thing for you to consider-Put a face/story to the homeless people you work with. Spend sometime getting to know your guests and share their stories. Knowing who PADS is helping and how would probably do more to further the cause than debates on an anonymous BB. Carpe Diem |

Oh please, is this as good as you could do, Yoss? I expected something much more creative than this from you. I think my 763 <now 764> posts in five years pales in comparison to your whopping 3,403 posts, also in five years. AND, if you look at the original post of this thread, it was hardly a plea from Dinsdale to start a PADS volunteering blitz. You have stated before that the time people have spent on this website has truly made a difference when it comes to referendums, downtown issues, etc... These are things that are important to you and you are obviously proud that you have made a difference with your thousands of posts, and you should be. Just because this is an issue you don't necessarily agree with doesn't mean that we can't be the same type of force on this message board, raising awareness for a cause that we are passionate about. What's the difference? Can't we play in the sandbox too? This message has been edited. Last edited by: GlenEllynRing, |

As I've stated in many previous posts, it's not if PADS should operate in GE (it should), but is the current business model effective in eliminating homelessness? I think GE should sponser PADS shelters, but with the GE community recognized a major stakeholder.
I also see great value in PADS trumpeting their success stories and putting a face to the homeless. What people are seeing in the GE business district are the vagrants, who probably represent 5% of PADS users, yet they have become the "face" of PADS. I have asked this question time & again, yet it goes unanswered-How does PADS measure success? What is their success rate based on that definition? When PADS leadership/advocates do not answer these and other inquiries, they leave themselves open to speculation and innuendo. Carpe Diem |

I would like to ask all my fellow GEBB posters to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 by a show of solidarity today. Forget your PADS affiliations or religious leanings and just be an American/Glen Ellynite today. I think a day's refrain from the homelessness behavior and success rate debates would do us all some good and give us time to reflect on what happened on that tragic day and how it affected us all.
So...leave each other alone, you two. If you were cats, I'd douse you with a bucket of water. "If the cap fits, wear it." |

Didn't see Yoss' request before I posted my reply this morning. No problem, I will comply. You can save that bucket of water and put it in your rain barrel and help the environment.

To keep the peace, let's take over the thread for the day, and post pictures in response to the question - if you were a cat, what cat would you be? Kitty's make everyone happy.
My choice - |

I'm not personally a supporter of PADS and have no intention of volunteering or otherwise supporting it. But if they had responsibly managed the situation they chose to create without imposing externalities on the community at large, I doubt I would ever have formed much of an opinion about them one way or another. Maybe I am unfairly cynical of PADS' efforts, but I have encountered many a group with ostensibly laudable goals who include an in-your-face confrontational agenda. I find that distasteful, I consistently refuse to support such groups, and suspect that is at least a minor portion of PADs m.o. I'm not a big churchgoer, but had long thought GECC had more things going for it than many of the other churches in town. The manner in which they have supported PADS has only served to lessen my opinion of their institution. But - there is no reason anyone in that or any other church should really care about my opinion. |

You're one of the very few then, since, as I've pointed out before, we are one of the few growing mainline Protestant churches in DuPage County. If most folks were truly turned off by our support of PADS, I hardly think we would be as healthy a congregation as we currently are. And truly, this has nothing to do with my support of the church I chose to be a part of. I was involved with PADS long before I chose FCCGE as my spiritual home. |

You can just look to this very message board and most of its posters <me included> for this very type of agenda. Dinsdale, you crack me up with your 'bullying' agenda on this board. Actually, no I take that back. I find it distasteful. YOU are the one that felt it necessary to start this thread, not just by posting a Letter to the Editor in the local paper and waiting for responses, but by adding an 'in-your-face' agenda-like opinion of the letter that was written. You're just being a hypocrite. |

Wait....Yoss. Uh, did you mean we shouldn't discuss anything today? Clarify, sir.
I will miss picking on these ladies who probably believe that they are doing our village a favor, but are far too gutless to identify themselves with the local press and are unjustly terrified of being identified by one of us on this board. I am all for differing opinions, but if you have an opinion and want to take a stance...have the cubes to stand up and identify yourselves. Gutless wonders. "If the cap fits, wear it." |
