Looks like Clam wasn't the only one-

From the Daily Herald

Glen Ellyn police are warning residents about individuals impersonating AT&T employees in an attempt to gain access to homes.

On Aug. 29, men showed up at a home on the 500 block of Country Club Lane, claimed that they were AT&T employees and asked to be allowed inside to check a cable modem.

A similar incident happened about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 700 block of Wingate Road, police said.

In both instances, the men left quickly after being denied access.

Now Glen Ellyn police are advising residents not to open the door unless they're expecting visitors.

"It is absolutely uncommon for a utility employee to come knocking at the door unannounced," Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer said. "We don't know if it's somebody casing to see if people are home or somebody trying to gain any opportunity to get into a home."

Holmer said legitimate employees should have identification, marked vehicles from the utility company and a proper uniform. He said people should be aware of their surroundings and immediately call police if they see something suspicious.

I got emails from both accounts. Everyone is spreading the word to be cautious.

coincidentally, last week i had two guys wearing ComEd uniforms holding roaring chain saws show up at my door claiming they were there to clear away the storm debris. the jacque plante masks were a dead giveaway that they were up to no good.

speaking of AT&T robbing...I've been hearing these public service announcements on the radio telling you to cancel the Linebacker service. So, I looked at my most recent bill and sure enough, there was the Linebacker charge of $6-7 a month. I cancelled it immediately. I've been a customer for over 10 years now and have never used the damn thing....any else use it?

Apparently not...what is it?

Linebacker is a phone company provided insurance plan that covers the wiring inside of your home. If there is a problem with the wiring inside you house (your responsibility) this covers the outrageous charges you would otherwise face for AT&T to locate and repair. I cancelled this coverage several years ago when I figured out that 1) I was in a newer home and the wiring was likely pretty good. 2) I have a cell phone and it is not such a big deal if your wiring has a problem and finally 3) Over the years, I had paid over $1000 for this coverage. I could get a lot of wiring fixed for that! We have not had any phone wiring problems and I hope I haven't jinxed myself here. We have saved over $400 from cancelling.

We on the other hand live in an older home and believe it or not the first line to be zapped is the phone line leading from the satellite dish. This happened once without linebacker and was very expensive for AT&T to make a house call and fix. We decided at the time to pay the $6 or $7 dollar insurance fee. We will review the need in the near future.

We are also in an older home, and have had to call on Linebacker services twice. Definitely has paid off for us, though I also thought it was only $1-$2/month.

Yeah, it used to be low, but it has been 'quietly' raised to $6.99/month.
