i agree...every year! by the time the trash trucks go around today there really is less for the village. i think there is less stuff because most of us have cleaned out over the years...my shed still looks good after the last clean out....
I propose new rules on what days the recyclers can come into town. Reuse of existing products should come first before recycling. Some scrap guys had better patio furniture on their piles then I have in my backyard...
Seems to me most people have bought less crap; also, Craig's list takes care of it between pick up years. I didn't see a lot out, although that didn't make my frustration at the bottlenecks caused by competing trash pickers on Spring Ave. any less palpable.
I know some of the Village Board members check in on this board and I wanted to say that I do not think this is necessary even every other year. I have to scrounge around to find something to throw out to feel I have received any value for this.
Who doesn't have an occasional Dumpster or a neighbor with some extra space in theirs for miscellaneous junk?
The first year of this event we had several neighbors who lost grills and furniture from behind their houses. One interrupted a crew moving his patio set to their truck in the middle of the night! I do like DTM's idea, but it would be near impossible to police.
There are plenty of scavengers that drive around looking for discarded items to use/ recycle.
Last week I flagged down a scavenger in my neighborhood. He took away fencing from 3 dog kennels and even cut up and hauled away my old 1963 Bolens Tractor (This thing was as big as a VW Beetle.) Cost me nada and I'm sure the guy made some money at the scrap yard.
Sorry Waste Management, Didn't need the overpriced dumpster.
I agree with that GEmom2 character. Thankfully, there isn't that much crap out there. Every other year...maybe every three years is more than enough.
I felt bad for the two 20-something boys trolling the streets in their Subaru wagon. Most likely looking to furnish their flat. There just wasn't anything out there. I have one or two little projects that will require $10-$12 worth of stickers...so I was in no hurry to do them this weekend.
Not certain how the village handles this event, but it has always been my thought that they have the refuse company sit back for a few days so a good percentage of the stuff disappears before it has to be picked up. Probably saves the village a lot of $$$. I have no problem with that.

I agree that this trash pick up is really not needed! I find with the larger garbage and recyling cans it is very easy to keep trash at a minimum. I also may use 3 or 4 stickers per year to get rid of anything that may be need to be thrown out.
I personally love this weekend. I scored some cedar lawn furniture.
I dont know if it was the weather, but this year seemed to be a light year (or the scavengers were very fast). Most of the stuff seems to get picked up by the scavengers. I was happy to see them take my mirrored closet doors.
I think the run up in metal prices a few years back really got the scavengers going. Anything with some metal- bicycles, air conditioners, furniture. It all goes fast now. Big stuff I help them throw on to the truck.
Interestingly at least my guys always honor the hands off the recycling bin (which I think technically becomes the property of the trash hauler/muni? when its placed off your property in the right of way).
Well, woke up this morning to find my two old recycling containers gone along with another garbage can that I used to handle the overflow recycling. Got home this evening and noticed that all the garbage on my street has been picked up.....except mine. Lovely, just effing lovely.
