I am moving to Glen Ellyn from Chicago in early August. I will still continue to work in the city, therefore, will need to take the train downtown everyday. As you know, the wait list for a commuter parking pass is 12+ months. Does anyone have any insight on how quickly the pay-per-day lot fills up? I just want to be prepared come August so I'm not frantically trying to get to work! Any information is appreciated.
Try the Civic Center. I believe the person or persons who tend to the flower beds haven't been to work for a few years now, so there has to be a vacant spot.
I have found in the past that it does not fill up very fast. You should be able to park. Make sure you get a ge sticker for your car after you move here. GE loves to ticket cars parked in the commuter lots without village stickers. There is limited commuter bus service as well.
I sent in my application this week to be put on the wait list for Glen Ellyn. I received a call back yesterday informing me that because my new home is in an unincorporated subdivision of Glen Ellyn, I am not eligible to receive a parking pass.
I have more bad news for you, KatieF: You are likely living outside the GE Library boundaries as well and may have to pay if you want a library card.
We were unincorporated many years ago and as we paid no real estate taxes to the Village of Glen Ellyn, its pension fund, plus the GE Library and its pension fund, we were not eligible for the resident parking, either. We were levied for the GE schools and Park District. You might want to look into where your fire protection and EMT services are coming from, too. Your real estate agent should have informed you of these incorporated/unincorporated distinctions.
You will need the Village sticker for Clam's approach - they do have you fill in a form linking the vehicle sticker application information - license, make and model - to your address.
Katie - do you work at Jenner? Coincidentally, I received an e-mail last week forwarded from a Katie who was moving to GE and looking for childcare info. Just curious.
When I moved here seven years ago, there were two lists for parking (GE residents, and non-residents). Did they say the wait list for the commuter lots is so long that they're just doing the resident list now? I know we're not the only town that restricts long-term passes to residents, though - just because of demand. That's one reason I passed up Naperville - it made the GE wait time look very reasonable.
And, yes, when I was house-hunting, I specifically told my realtor I wanted lake water and an incorporated address (no matter what suburb I ended up in). Sure, the lower taxes for non-incorporated look good at first....
Library lot should work, as it's a daily pay - I parked there before I got into the Montclair lot.
Now, if by chance you go to Lombard, your train pass would be less since that's zone D, and we're E. Or, check Wheaton, I suppose. That's a nicer town that Lombard anyway.

Be sure to post the village car sticker on your car if you park in *any* lot for the train.
I found this out the hard way, and it cost an amazing amount of money: the ticket, the sticker, and the *late fee* for the sticker. It was crazy expensive -- especially since I just moved here and was never told about the idiotic "stickers."
The cop dude in his little mini SUV will cruise the parking and will find you. Maybe not today, but he *will* find your unstickered car.
Not surprisingly, the village folks in the village office were unmoved by (if I recall) my deliberately calm and lucid explanation of *why* I didn't have the sticker and my pointing out that this was not a very neighborly how-dee-do for someone new to what seemed to be rather Kafka-esque rules of the Village. The cashieress (cashierix?) pointed me to the cops across the hall and was like, yeah whatever, take it up with the fuzz, Slick.
I have taken a train downtown for over 17 years, first from Naperville, then Rt3 59, and now GE. I like to think of commuting as survival of the fittest.
In Naperville people rent out spots in their driveway, maybe they do that here.
I could have sworn I read that in either Naperville or Aurora, a private entity was bulding a parking condo for commuters. And in most towns, any reasonably nice condo or apartment within walking distance of a train station runs, well, more than I could afford.

But if she is unincorporated, or here vehicle is registered to an address outside the village, she shouldn't need a vehicle sticker... that's still the case isn't it? Or does the GEPD now do what the City of Chicago does? Write a ticket for any vehicle without a city sticker parked in a residential area, no matter where it is registered to? I'm still fighting one of those some ten years later....
