Anyone else get the notes on their door today from the First Congregational on behalf of PADS?
Note basically says that the needs of the homeless don't end when the summer comes, and therefore they are extending the services that PADS offers to a year-round program (someone over there must feel guilty for something!)
No discussion with the community (prior to this note), still no responsibility for the neighbors and local stores. There were phone numbers to call people at the church if anyone has any problems with them extending the program.
Folks, the homeowners and businesses in town are losing....
Glellyn Would you share the phone numbers on the flyer? We should all give them a call as all of us will be affected by such a decision not just the immediate neighbors of the church.
One of the many things that's irksome.... the note says that this program is a "joint effort" between 1st Congregational, Faith Lutheren, St Marks and St Pet's... so why is this at 1st Congregational and not at St Pets and St Marks??

You mean Grace Lutheran, right? I don't think Faith Lutheran has anything to do with this.
No... the letter states Faith Lutheren. It seems that all four churches sponsor this PADS program that is run through 1st Cong. But the other churches seem to have taken a NIMBY approach as far as actually hosting the people in their space.
I have known about this for 2 months. That is because the previous list of churches, one of which I am a member of, particpates but do not hosts PADS. This means that on 4 or 5 nights during the summer members of our church will be running PADS out of 1st Cong.
I have not committed my name to work it, but I am considering it. I have been a member of a church which did take in PADS individuals at night, Peace Lutheran, and have always wondered how it all works and such.

I already posted this information a while ago on this BB. First Con will host a PADS night ONCE PER MONTH during the summer months. First Con is the host facility but other churches pitch in and help staff the effort (and provide food, etc).
Again, I remind you all that it isn't that PADS is the problem: It's a small number of people who use PADS that cause problems.

I just left a message for Sue Markowski at the church - basically asking her to call back, saying that the PADS objectives are certainly worthy, but that I, as a Glen Ellyn homeowner and daily train commuter, have witnessed panhandling at the train station by people trying to get back downtown, and am often afraid of stopping at Einstein's and Starbucks due to being intimidated by those who appear to be PADS clients. And wondered what responsibility the church(es) take for ensuring that the PADS clients and the village residents can live comfortably with each other.
Was hoping to talk to her live, but will see if she leaves a message at my home number.
Had PADS ever responded directly to anyone (village or BB) regarding what specific steps they're taking to address concerns?

She's just the secretary so you probably won't get a call back from her but from someone else who coordinates our PADS hosting......

Excuse me, but I call BS on this. To the extent PADS is encouraging these people to come to our town, PADS IS responsible for the problem. A responsible neighbor cleans up their own messes.
Perhaps Dins, but there are homeless people in DuPage county....where should they go?

Florida?
Just kidding. I suspect PADS has at least 2 goals: 1. to serve the homeless 2. to push an agenda, in part by raising public awareness of this situation, even if that means pissing people off.
I'm not thrilled with people intentionally or knowingly lowering the quality of my life to push their personal agendas.
Short of getting too deep into a discussion of what to do about the homeless, I favor a public over private response, and I am personally not too terribly sympathetic towards "the homeless" as a group.
In Amy's defense, I'm sure not every person that utilizes the services of organizations like PADS behaves inappropriately while in town. It's just that those who do act inappropriately threaten the existence of PADS in Glen Ellyn by raising the ire of its residents. I'm not sure how to separate the two, and also don't feel it should be up to me to figure that out. I agree with you that solving the problem should be placed at the feet of those who attract people who act that way into our community.
