Just pulled my plat to confirm what we all knew already - you are indeed correct, my friend. I humbly stand corrected and will NEVER doubt your wisdom again (well - at least not tonight and in this thread!)

Can I get you to come over and say that wisdom part to my wife? I'll shovel the walk before you get here.

Possible in some cases. Of course, in many more instances with icy sidewalks I notice the driveways are neatly plowed. Gotta be able to drive, no reason to make it easy for people to walk.

My favorite is a home on the N side of Turner, just west of the one C. George is working on. They consistently clear their driveway in a manner such that it piles snow onto the sidewalk on either side of the driveway, which subsequently freezes over into nice icy mounds. Nice!

Propably they have a professional driver/plow that stops by. They probably don't pay for extra services, ie. driver getting out and shoveling and salting. That is an extra cost and insurance risk. I know, I've been quoted prices recently - remember my thread and the extras start at $30.00 and go up from there in addition to the actual driveway.

Huh? Positive what? I fear I'm totally clueless again when it comes to the hip, trendy people on this board. I'm busy, you know! I don't have time to read every single post!

So I should apologize for my trust fund comment? OK, but I still don't know how people in their late twenties, early thirties with babies can afford million dollar homes. 'Tis a mystery to me. Even if they're fancy lawyers and doctors and stuff, didn't they have massive student loans to pay off???

Or - let me put it this way. Until I moved to Glen Ellyn, the only people I knew with million dollar homes were much, much older couples, CEOs of small businesses, that kind of thing. I first heard the phrase "Trust Fund Baby" from a GE native after I first moved here. In fact, I believe it was uttered by the realtor who was showing me around to the tiny little houses we could actually afford, in response to my puzzlement concerning why so many of these huge mansions had plastic Little Tyke playground equipment in the backyards.

So don't jump all over me! I'm just a simple Hoosier girl.

Just in case mine is not the last household on earth that uses a shovel to clear their driveway and sidewalks, I suggest heading out now and doing an initial clearing -- it's some of the heaviest snow this year. It was easy to push along, but when you finally lifted a shovelful - oh man!

I just came in from shoveling as well and this snow is heavy! Excellent for snowballs and forts, but it won't be any lighter in the morning and the wind is supposed to pick up. BTW - it is now too late for your snowblower! Smile

I will be more than happy to swing by and do it when I get home. Just let me know.

And I'll even do it for free.... Smile

I didn't mean to jump all over you if that's what I did. I like your posts and what you write - however that comments seemed out of character and I wasn't sure if it read the way you wanted it to. I guess it did..but nonetheless, I still like you. Smile

Ah, that's the thing about the Internet! I'm really quite bitter and sarcastic about some things. Particularly about people 15 years younger than me owning million dollar homes. It's a character flaw, I know, but there you go.

And btw, as I was out shoveling my driveway and sidewalk today at 6:45 AM, as Mr. Scribbler is out of town, I couldn't help but notice that the million dollar house owned by people 15 years younger than me just 4 doors down still had snowy sidewalks and driveway. When I came home from driving my son to West at 7:45, still snowy. Although someone had driven a big SUV down the driveway from the garage, through the snow. And I'll bet that this afternoon, the sidewalks will still be snow covered. And it makes me really mad, for some reason. I'll excuse little old ladies living by themselves from shoveling snow, but not 30-year-olds in McMansions, one of whom stays home with the baby, I know for a fact. Get out and shovel the stupid walk!!!!!

(Again, I know my extreme prejudice against rich young people who don't shovel their walks is despicable, but it's deeply ingrained.)

scribbler: try to focus on all of the property taxes those young'uns are paying to support the schools. That might help cheer you up. Smile

I was driving the hubby to the train this morning and was almost broadsided by some dork in a pick-up plow truck who didn't even look before reversing down the drive he was clearing and out into the street (way too fast for conditions, btw). That would have really ruined my day.

I also noticed a disproportionate number of sidewalks already cleared along north Western Avenue by 8:15 this morning!! Wink

Comes off as a bit bitter and jealous. But, oh well.... keep hatin'. You're among the like-minded.

Glellyn-In the spirit of positive week, please try not to bait fellow BB members with judgemental statements. I know you can do it and I have every confidence that you will become part of the greater good.

Be well.

Absolutely. I'm smarter and prettier than almost everyone I know, so there's not much to be jealous about, really...hence, I focus on the wealthy.

(And please understand, my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek. Just in case that didn't come across.)

We live in the coveted Lambert RD. area…

Yesterday before work I dutifully shoveled my driveway and sidewalk. I know for a fact that the 2 houses on either side of me had shoveled sidewalks as well. I was rather shocked to come home last night and find a good inch of ice on the end of my driveway and sidewalk. This morning I noticed almost every house from Greenfield to Roosevelt had icy sidewalks. The plows run all day on Lambert and since the parkway is small here it kicks snow up onto the sidewalk.

I’m sure we are not the only street with this issue, so it’s not always the homeowner’s fault when the sidewalks are icy!

P.S. As soon as it warms up enough to melt a little, I promise to go chop ice!

Walking to the train this a.m. I counted the homes on one block on a relatively main street less than 2-3 blocks from the train station.
-There are a total of 6 houses on this side of the street on this block.
-2 had shoveled their entire walks.
-1 had shoveled 1/2 of their walk - from their walkway to one property line, but not the other.
-3 do not appear to have made any effort to remove any snow - consistent with their behavior all winter and previous winters (tho one of the 3 sold in the past year). To be fair, one of the lazy slobs has a corner lot, and shoveled the leg perpindicular to the block I'm discussing, but not the other leg.

As far as I can tell, the residents of each of these homes are under 50. They all have children, some are high-schoolers, but some appear a tad young to effectively push a shovel.

I readily admit that this block has the highest percentage of lazy inconsiderate bums of any block I've encountered. But just thought that 2.5 out of 6 shoveling was pretty impressively miserable.

I live near those Roosevelt "slums" as one of my colleagues describes my neighborhood. Ever since I got the Enclave, Buchholz hasn't brought his snowblower along my front walk. He used to be a good neighbor when I had the crappy Dodge Caravan. I think he does everyone else's walk except mine.

What do you think Rob Herbold?
