I think you'll be in really big trouble!!! I called the Village regarding low branches overhanging the sidewalk and street, and they gave me an indefinite timeframe that they'd be able to come out. I said I'd just go ahead and do it myself and they got pretty miffed, telling me that since they were parkway trees, it was Village property and I'd better not touch those branches! Roll Eyes

Or would there be liability issues if something happened while or after I completed the job.

Clam, just put on an orange reflective vest when you do it, maybe put a few cones out, and no one will say boo about it. Nor will anyone look at you long enough to recognize you. I'm pretty much convinced that you could plant landmines in front of national monuments, and as long as you were wearing a hard hat and orange vest, no one would notice and everyone would assume what you're doing is honky dory.

Absolutely true.

We've been asking for YEARS to get our alley paved with some engineering that allows it to drain properly instead of the back of people's yards (and, by the way, they keep adding more gravel causing the elevation of the alley to just get higher and higher so that our garage approach ramp is now slightly BELOW grade when it was ABOVE grade when we built it). But our friends down the street who have a half-alley took matters into their own hands and has their's privately paved (without a permit or any involvement from the village and forcing all neighbors to contribute even though one Mom was the one who really wanted it done). We called the village to ask:

*How the people down the street got their alley paved,
*When might we get our done? AND
*We mentioned that it looks like the village must be contracting out the paving work because there were signs from the private paver posted at the newly paved alley.

Our response from the village? None.
Any reprecutions from the village to the homeowners who paved without a permit? Nope.

No wonder people feel empowered to do whatever they want to the town.... Roll Eyes

Remember, this needs to appear to be a village job. To look authentic, you need one guy working and 5 watching.

Dear _____________

This is in response to your letter concerning the above referenced matter.

While the incident that occurred to you is unfortunate and we regret the inconvenience to you, please be advised that the County is not responsible for damage such as this. The County is liable in these instances only when we have been placed on prior notice that a hazard or hazardous condition exists at a specific location and we fail to take adequate measures to protect the public. Unfortunately, we were unaware of any pothole on St. Charles Road at this location and any potential damage that the situation could cause. As such, the County must deny your claim.

Very truly yours,
