Pulling in the driveway after 7pm I saw what I thought was a small mound of dirty snow and wondered where it came from. Then the mound turned and looked straight into my headlights.
Two kids were amazed as this small owl looked at us with hardly a movement. Then it spread these over-sized wings and drifted up and over the fence. Some online researching has us agreeing it was a Saw Whet Owl, but it states it is rarely seen. Anyone else have an owl sighting recently? |

Fish's myspace name is whet owl. That was his nickname in college. Fish, tell them what that meant......this is a great story....

Facebook, not myspace. You are so 2006. Also, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! Can't believe you even brought that story up! A clear violation of the Man Code. Back on subject, the wife and I were awakened a few nights ago by a very persistent owl. Pretty cool sounding even if it was 3 am. Couldn't see it, but no mistaking it. I am a dyslexic agnostic insomniac. I lay awake at night wondering if there is a dog. |

Thank god he didn't try to take a picture of it! Remember when he tried to take a picture of that wood duck? That was funny...it would have been cool if he had actually placed the duck anywhere near the center of the shot. Fish: "Hey guys, look at my wood duck...oh, its that spec in the upper left hand corner of the photo." |

We see the owls occasionally in the trees in our backyard.
Sometimes they "speak" to others. I love to hear them. |

I posted a while back about a set of owls that were in our yard one evening when we came home. Can't find the old post but I think I had determined it was another breed of owl. However, the picture you posted looks a lot like the ones we had. They were beautiful. Like others, we hear them at night sometimes - talking to each other. I love that sound. It's probably one of my favorites. On the other hand, my least favorite sound is the "screaming" of small rodents and rabbits who are being attacked by the owls (or neighborhood cats). But, I guess that's life so I just put my pillow over my head until I fall back asleep.

Try living across the street from three little yelping dogs. I'm on my last leg with those things.... |

the first year we were in GE, we had a mother owl and 6 youngins for 5 straight nights in our massive tree. It was so cool. The youngsters would rock back and forth sitting next to each other and the wife and I would just sit there and laugh. It was always too dark to get a good photo.
Shockingly, our squirrel population dropped drastically around the same time. We had a dozen baby squirrels in the same tree that were as fun to watch as the baby owls, so I hooked up a webcam so that we could watch them while not at home. Squirrelcam lasted a week or so as the population became owl food apparently. |

Checking with our animal experts back when we had our little visitors, we had Eastern Screech Owls in our area.

Yeah that's early in the evening to see/hear one. I always hear mine at around 2-3 AM, around the Hillside Ave., Area.

I saw the absolute coolest thing when I was driving to Thanksgiving dinner. I was turning south on Taylor of off Crescent Circle (is that what it's called?) and saw a red-tailed hawk fly out of a tree and clamp down on a squirrel. It was all I could do to not smash the car. You have to keep in mind that I don't like squirrels and I do like hawks. The hawk flew away with his dinner only to drop it at 15-20 feet up. Not sure what became of that squirrel.
Seeing that was way cooler than watching one snack on a squirrel while in a neighbor's tree. |

Maybe we could do that wife swap thing like I saw on TV. Clearly your kids would be safer, if not happier. Parker certainly would welcome the additional attention, as I am sure you have little time for her considering your post count. I would also enjoy laying down some rubber in your 2002. (BTW, saw a nice one at Gearhead last night). You would also reap significant health benefits from the longer walk to the choo choo. Ms. Fish wouldn't even know...she's never home. I am a dyslexic agnostic insomniac. I lay awake at night wondering if there is a dog. |

As a woman, I would like to say, perhaps you should consult your wife regarding the "swap".
