It is my "green initiative" to roll through stops when safely (no police presence) possible. Those full and complete stops are bad for my gas mileage! Wink

Maybe they are crabby because they DID just get a dog. We just got one and the sweet, non-housetrained, little girl simply did not want to be in her crate last night. She kept us all up with her complaints. I'm quite tired and crabby this morning.

Never take the puppy out of the crate...no matter how po'ed it gets. Take it out once and you'll be OK...take it out twice and your goose is cooked. The thing will never stay in it peacefully. Frown

What's a crate? Confused

Personally, never had any use/need for them. Cool

Ah . . the crate

The ultimate in dog care paradoxes.

Both the greatest thing in the world for a dog (personal space) and a torture chamber all rolled into one.

I liken the crate to cigarettes (without the untimely death). No one likes them the first time, yet many find themselves quite attached after a few tries.

Never had a dog that didn't love the crate. To the point of voluntarily retreating to it when tired or stressed.

A necessity for the first 12 months.

Can this crate type object also be referred to as a cage?

We have a Husky...always called it a cage...must be the door that's throwing me off. Just never heard it referred to as a crate and thought maybe the word "cage" wasn't PITA correct.

I understand that your dog is the only dog in Glen Ellyn that has not peed on your carpet, consumed your kid's footwear or eaten your kitchen cabinets, but the vast majority of puppies do. Mine certainly would if offered the chance. Given that the dog (dog....mind you, not child) looks at the cage/crate as his/her own room, I see zero reason to let the dog have the run of the house when I am away or during the evening when I am going night-night.

As I said, Lio is no Fido. Lio would eat live children if given the opportunity. Since there is a way to curb her youthful enthusiasm that does not harm or offend her, I am going to use it.

Crate training --- aka “puppy training” -- is a fast-and-efficient way of training puppies where-and-when to “go” (as opposed to the much more difficult when-and-when not to go).

Once you understand their natural eat-piddle-play-sleep cycle, along with the fact that they will try their darndest to not foul their own bed (the crate), everybody's happy. Only takes a few days.

To oversimplify:
1. Feed.
2. Outside until empty
3. Romp-and-play
4. Crate (sleep)
5. Repeat.

Details here.
We've used it very successfully with five dogs over the years.

Unfortunately for the publishing industry, it's one less reason to need a dead-tree versions of newspapers.

Sounds like you are going with a defective breed!

Hey, I'm not saying crates are a bad thing, I was just questionning your description of them as a "necessity" - as I have always had dogs for the past several decades and have never had the need or desire for a crate.
