Perplexed and Yossarian's posts regarding the old Popular Creek, got me to thinking about what can become an interesting thread.

What bands would you follow back in the day? (Please provide a youtube link)

I used to love Rush in high school and a little bit in college. I still like them but would not go to a show. Back in the day, I saw them play probably 10 times...owned every one of their albums...and even got to play golf with the guitarist, Alex Lifeson, when he was in Chicago in 1997.

That brings back bad memories! I had a roommate in college who travelled with her mom to as many Barry Manilow shows as possible. She was so proud that Barry actually got her up on stage one time and had an entire bedroom wall decorated with Barry-abilia. That's not you is it, Buggy? This will be easy to figure out: Were you ever one of Playboy's "Girls of the Big Ten???" Eek Eek

Great thread topic Fan!

Those seen in concert multiple times back then: Springsteen, The Dead, Buffet and all of those Motown acts. Oh, and James Taylor with the (now) wife.

As easy as it is to make fun of Barry, he was the only true talent that came out of that schlock grouping in the '70s...and that includes Neil Diamond. Manilow could write. Was a prolific jingle writer and musician. Not a big fan, but let's say I can understand why people are.

I actually do admire his musical talent - a little schlocky, but it has worked for decades, so you can't argue with success. The recent plastic surgery problems just make me feel sorry for him. It's a tough business - no old people allowed!

I'm a huge fan of Genesis and saw them when the played the United Center last year. You could even by a CD of the specific show you attended which I thought was very cool.

I'm going to see Tom Petty at the UC in July, I saw him before and he put on a great show.

The first concert I ever saw was RUSH at the Auditorium in 1976, Cheap Trick was the warm-up act. Tickets were $7. I thought about seeing RUSH this summer but Mrs. Yoss was cool to the ideal.

Speaking of old people. When I was a mere child, my brother (who formed most of my musical tastes) turned me on to Steely Dan. Most consider them relics, but to me their stands the test of time...unlike those early episodes of SNL. The mix o hard rock and jazz influences has always made me a huge fan. Most of their material is about whacked out stuff...herion addiction, child abuse, double helixes, etc. Here is one such tune accompanied by a goofy homemade collage of drawings.

Dr. Wu

Song is about Donald Fagen's drug addiction...lyrics clearly point a lot of this out...and there is a really cool Wayne Shorter sax solo. Perhaps Dr. Wu was either his supplier or the dude that got him off H.

I suspect most will not enjoy it. Parker loathes Steely Dan. I told her she will be playing the entire catalog (less Hey 19) at my wake. Best time I ever had at a concert was going to a Donald Fagen solo show a couple years ago at the Chicago Theater...by myself. Bought a single ticket....front row centerish....15-20 feet away from my hero.

Cheap Trick never gained the following that they should have, IMO. They were never considered outstanding...which is a shame.

I think I saw these guys once..well I'm pretty sure I did...it's all kind of blurry...Dead Kennedys

This line almost never worked...Romeo Void

I'm sure some others will come back to me in time.

Clam! My husband and I are HUGE Steely Dan/Donald Fagan fans! We were at the same concert. If we'd have known, we could have gotten seats together!! Great concert. Also saw Steely Dan at the Auditorium Theater late in 07. Another good show. We listen to one of the CD's in our cars often. We went to Howl at the Moon (dueling paino bar) in Chicago and requested any Steely Dan - they loved us because usually people want them to play, "My Ding-A-Ling" or something sophomoric like that. (Mind you, it CAN be funny.)

So, here's my contribution: Following the rules.

And my husband DOES drink Scotch Whiskey all the time.... Smile

Why do you have to stop following bands you used to? Keep liking them and add more as you go. The first album I ever bought in 1973 was Led Zeppelin IV (came out in 1971). I was 7. Still listen to it on occasion to this day. Music does not get old, or lame, or out of date when you get older, you still like it deep down inside.

Amy:

My eldest son and I were at that Auditorium show. I believe we dined at Scoozi prior. He was rightfully unimpressed. The birth of a food snob.....

BTW, all the years he turned his nose up at me and my Led Zeppelin addiction...you'll never guess who, at age 12, is suddenly completely and totally obsessed with their music. Knows the original members by name.
